  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • When I am on day release at college I am studying all things engineering, trying to get my level 3 and then hnc. But when at Heathrow I am shadowing the technicians learning on the job and trying to pick up knowledge in all areas mechanical and electrical.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have. I’ve learnt how to use all sorts of tools and how to evaluate a job and recognise what is the problem with the job as well as the associated health risks.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it. The first year was 5 days a week at college which was really interesting. The first year was more practical which gave me an exposure to a new environment. And now I’m at work I can’t apply those skills and knowledge I learnt and engage in the activities at work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well. There are monthly meetings to keep us apprentices informed and up to do date with any new changes. We are also set on rotations which are pre determined so you know you are going to be moving about and it’s not a surprise.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Loads. Whenever there is a problem I can ask my manager which then allows the problem to be solved. If it’s not that serious the techs that I work with every day are always there to help and will always answer questions.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Enough. Sometimes it can be a bit unorganised but on the whole when you need support it is there.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A lot. Especially the knowledge l learned in the electrical units, practical and theoretical. This has made me understand the basics and expand on that in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes

  • 9a. Would you recommend Heathrow Academy to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great way to broaden your technical knowledge in many different areas, mechanical and electrical. It teaches you to work in teams and apply your knowledge in new systems to keep them running

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Heathrow Academy?
  • When at college keep on top of your work and don’t let it build up. But when at work always come with a keen attitude and always be up for any job that comes your way.
