  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day business I work as a service delivery engineer for openreach. This involves fixing and providing copper telephone lines and getting customers in service. It could be up a pole or working in an exchange. It requires testing and meeting set standards required for each job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, from the start I had no previous telecoms knowledge. I now feel confident and comfortable completing my job role. I had great support from [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] during a tough period of covid who guided me through the apprenticeship and helps with any questions that I had. I now feel comfortable and capable in my role

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I found the program enjoyable yet challenging at points. There is a lot of different evidence that is required but I also got support from my patch. The sessions were challenging but arts of the programme but overall it was an enjoyable experience and I learnt a lot of new skills

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure was very organised and absence were pre arranged in the diary for the days that I was required to attended the virtual sessions. Communication was great via email and support was also available over the phone or using Skype with the assessor directly. This was communicated well with management also

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There was a lot of support provided by the employer. They would set out additional days or put me with a buddy to help complete certain tasks by required deadlines. I was once put on a morning absence to help complete photo evidence required for the NVQ. This helped a lots

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There was a lot of support provided as previously mentioned. He was always available via Skype sessions or on the phone or email. We would discuss action plans to get the work completed on time and also screen share to help make sure that the actions I was completing were correct.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I felt that it gave a good grounding int the basics of the role but also made sure that we completed lots of different tasks to become well rounded engineers. Most of the work I learnt on the job but with the assistance of the apprentice program it help provide a vast range.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not a huge amount of extra activities to complete although there are options for overtime and time spent with patch leads and managers to discuss development and how things are going. They will come meet to check up on how we are getting on and when covid restrictions lift meetings will resume.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have already referred my sister who has now started working for the company and a second friend who is in his final stages of interviewing. I have found it to be the best workplace that I have been an employee for and enjoy the variety of work and the freedom and trust you are given.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • To keep to the apprentice schedule. Make the most of the support that is given to you and the buddying days. I also feel it is very important to find other people in the patch you can speak to with jobs and get assistance or words of advice from. Thanks
