  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job role now is as part of a central finance team, I have 12 City Plumbing branches that I am responsible for. I have to make sure that invoices from suppliers match , that the branches are processing their goods in accurately, stock levels are correct, chasing suppliers for credits due. I am in communication with my branches and if they have any issues or concerns with stock, suppliers, with anything to do with their finances that could affect their branch, then I am the person they can turn to .

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thought soon after I started that the programme was not going to stretch my capabilities enough but with the help of my facilitator and mentor, we geared it to make sure that it did, it was made personnel to me.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I was fortunate to have the same facilitator and mentor throughout the programme, this helped a lot and I felt supported. I also attended the support meetings which gave me the time to keep my work up to date, not always possible in the workplace. My manager was supportive in giving me time off the floor to study. The last 3 months the workshops took place via google hangout because of Covid, I am pleased I had the majority of them face to face in a classroom.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Once my Manager understood that this apprenticeship workload was to happen in work time he was very good, I do not think he realised at the beginning and had expected me to do the work in my own time. My mentor was fantastic in explaining to him this was not the case. He would always set time aside to go through with me how my workshops were going.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The English and Maths I found very daunting prospects to take on board, having been away from the classroom for many years. But this has been a big achievement to me to pass these exams and to make me believe in myself more. I have now had promotion in the workplace , which I am sure the skills I learnt on this programme have helped me to achieve.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Travis Perkins Plc to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have developed over the 13 years since I was employed by the group and given opportunities. I think the training when I joined the company, it was PTS then, was better , I had a trainer come into the branch for 3 days to train me. There are opportunities within the group to develop.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins Plc?
  • Find out about the whole group, as a company every aspect is covered in the construction business. One side of the business may suit you better.
