  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice at BMW you will be attending college on-site on a Monday and from Tuesday to Friday you will be in the apprentice workshop, Mondays will involve partaking in college classes and completing the college assignments, while for the rest of the week you will be being trained in the apprentice workshop on rotations such as hand fitting, electrical, welding, machining, fluid power and more.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. Throughout my time at BMW i have learn many skills, some of these skills that i have learned are educational skills on subjects such as maths and physics from college days, and some of these skills are manual skills which include lathing, welding, soldering, drilling and an extremely large amount more.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I extremely enjoy my programme at BMW, the amount of college work is spaced out enough that it is not overbearing at any point and you are also given any help that you would need, so you do not have to stress or struggle over it. On the whole all of the new skills that you will be learning and the work that coincides with that are all very enjoyable

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship at BMW is decently organised, usually everything is running fine in the apprentice area but sometimes there is a lack of communication between the apprentices / tutors and the managers. sometimes at extremes like only being informed about an event that means that you temporarily lose access to classrooms or the workshop a day or hours before.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • At BMW you will not necessarily have a large amount of interaction with your employer themselves and you will have much more interaction with your tutors and instructors from the college, who are always willing to help, but the managers make clear that they are there if you need them for any reason and they almost always are.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • While being an apprentice at BMW your tutors are willing to help you whenever you need it, however much you need it and whatever you need it on. They will help and support you as much as you need in order to acquire the skills and achieve your goals in the workshop. They will do the same for your college work too, supporting you as much as necessary so that you can get your assignments done to a high quality.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • While doing work for BMW my knowledge learned from BMet college has come into play a countless amount of times, whether that be theory from PLCs, electrical and electronics or fluid power giving you a better understanding of them when doing the practical or the general understanding of how you need to keep your workshop you get from learning health and safety, it all gets used in some way.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • While infrequent BMW put on some large scale extra-curricular activities that you can partake in if you choose to, some of these that i have witnessed throughout my time there include making a project mini to display at local events, challenges such as mountain hiking challenges and visiting your old schools to talk about the apprenticeship.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend this apprenticeship, there is so many positives to it, these are things include earning a great qualification, learning many practical skills you will need when you get into a job role, earning a good wage, access to the company car scheme and real experience of the workplace before starting on an actual job position.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BMW Group?
  • To those thinking of applying to become an apprentice at BMW the main pieces of advice that i would give are to show passion and get involved, you will make yourself look ideal for the placement if you have a real interest in the subject or the brand, you will also look good if you show that you are able to work successfully in a team, even if you don't know the other members.
