  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I can do a wide variety of different things. Typically on a Monday I attend college at South West Durham Training. At college I study; hydraulics and pneumatics, project, communication in engineering and programable logic controllers. During the rest of the week I typically shadow experienced technicians as well as doing my own jobs and projects.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Through out my apprenticeship I am always improving my skills. The main skills I have developed through my apprenticeship are mechanical and electrical. I have also improve my fabrication and welding skills. My communication skills have also improved as I am required to communicate with a wide range of people in a variety of ways.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • So far I am enjoying my GSK engineering apprenticeship greatly. I have been able to take part in various activity's that I have found very enjoyable. The resilience events that I have been able to take part in have been very enjoyable. The resilience event in Eskdale was great as there was opportunity's to try new activities.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program has a clear layout. That lay out involves studying at South West Durham training every Monday towards a level 3 BTEC. During the rest of the week you are in your work area. Every 6 months your work area changes. Currently there are 4 work areas you will be placed in; Site services, Derms, Steriles and Q block.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • GSK can offer lots of support through out your apprenticeship. The amount of support offered by GSK can vary depending on how much support you require. If you feel you are not offered enough support you can request additional help and you are extremely likely to receive some. GSK also has lots of online resources for additional help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is South West Durham Training. South West Durham Training offers lots of support as I can email all my tutors for additional support if the lesson was unclear or I have a query. South West Durham will always provide feedback to ensure you are always working at your best.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My Operations and maintenance BTEC helps me to perform better at work. As I have a better understanding of how the machines work both mechanically and electrically. Additionally my Level 2 PEO in Operations and Maintenance has given me the practical skill to operate in a work environment on a daily basis.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At Glaxo Smith Kline there are lots different extra curricular events and activities you take part in. such as: outwards bounds events, residentials, trips to other GSK sites, resilience events, social activities such as nights out, charity football matches, networking events with other GSK employees and apprentices and much more.

  • 9a. Would you recommend GSK to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Glaxo Smith Kline to anyone who wants to work somewhere great. The biggest benefit of working at GSK is the immense amount of reward you get knowing that you producing potentially lifesaving medicine. GSK will also support through all troubles and needs. Additionally they will provide any training you need.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to GSK?
  • The tips for anyone applying to GSK is to just be themselves while trying their best to follow the core values(Listed below). "Patient Focus is about always doing the right thing for patients and consumers and striving for the highest quality. Transparency helps us build trust with each other and with society by being honest and open about how and what we do. Respect means supporting colleagues and the communities around us, embracing diversity and individuality, so we can all achieve great things. Integrity is about how we expect the highest ethical behaviors of ourselves and others."
