  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My daily role involves providing fibre optic cabling and associated equipment to connect private homes and businesses with super fast broadband using BT Openreach's existing underground and overhead network. This is attained by using a multitude of cabling, rodding and winching techniques which I learning about throughout my training.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As I had never worked in this or a similar industry before everything was new to me and as such all the skills that I have been learning are new to me, even using a laptop as part of my job is something that I had limited knowledge of previously.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have been really enjoying my training so far as I was at a time in life when I was needing a new goal and this move into a more challenging engineering role was exactly what I was looking for. Any help I need is also provided when and if required.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My training is all organised by my assessor who fits all my SVQ training days around my daily work commitments and keeps me informed of where and when I am required to present myself for each part of my continuing. I am given plenty of advanced warning by email of upcoming sessions.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am given as much help as is required and feel as though I can ask for help through many mediums from my own assessor to seeking advice on the BT intranet and many associated web sources. My work fellow co workers have also been through this process and are always there to give advice.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Most of my training is relevant to what I do on a day to day basis and as discussed involves what is a new career and new skills that I didn't previously use in a professional capacity, although I do feel some of the units contain some skills that I don't use in my job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have an app available called Workplace which is almost identical to Facebook but is based purely on work and work related items of interest which I have found really helpful and a great source of information over the six moths or so that I have been involved in BT Openreach
