  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Fixing faults within the openreach network, providing new lines for customers from hundreds of different service providers. Visiting customers premises and running new cables, lines and extensions including data extensions. Also setting up people’s phone and broadband lines within businesses. I manage my own day and workload and I really enjoy my job!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme because it is well organised and I know exactly what is expected of me within the classroom based work. There is loads of support from coaches and the more experienced engineers for the field based work so I never feel alone on job I’m struggling with. Somebody is always near by and happy to help

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. I get allocated days off the tools to go and complete my course work and lots of support and encouragement from the people around me in my classes and my assessor who was brilliant. My manager also assisted in getting absences so we could get the photos for the proof of practice portions of the scheme

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I received a lot of support. There are so many systems in place to assist young and starting out engineers such as coach workshops and coaching visits when you’re out on the tools as well as online courses and team huddles. There I also coach on demands which is a team of very experienced engineers who are on call and ready to help

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My NVQ sessions and my assessor were brilliant. I’m not academically minded at all but the sessions were set out in blocks of 3 days at a time and we all worked on the same parts of the NVQ together giving us support and we always knew what was expected of us to complete in those days.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gave me the theoretical understanding of the job and also the business I would be working within. Knowing I had to complete certian bits of coursework lead me into parts of the business I might not have been familiar with if I hadn’t had to research and write about them.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We organise Christmas parties for the whole team to get involved in. We are also going to have a summer party or BBQ this year to get together socially. There is a group of lads that play football on a Thursday night but I’m currently injured via football so I couldn’t take them up on the offer to play.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because of the size of the company. There are so many places to go within the business and so many different jobs. The training was fantastic and I feel very confident in my work only having been on a short time. The pay is also very good and the leave is good the sick pay is good and there are so many Benifits it would take me a very long time to list them all. Like free physio

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Get your head down and work on your coursework during the allocated timeframe so you don’t have to worry about it when it when it comes to the end of the apprenticeship. Listion and learn from the older and more experienced engineers values chances are they have been there and done it. Customer is king always remember that and remember to always work safely
