  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Fibre Network Delivery engineer within Openreach, as part of my normal day I am part of the Overhead and poling team where we recover and reinstate damaged or dangerous telegraph poles, ensuring that all lines and cables are restored. this will involve using heavy weigh Pole Erection units, drills and Mobile crane platforms.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills since starting my career with Openreach, coming from a military background, I have been able to use my transferable skills, such as discipline, personal pride, ethos, loyalty and commitment in my new job. I have also learnt new technical and analytical skills through my training and buddying that I can apply to my day to day role.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured, it was simple to follow from the start, we are given detailed information regarding what we need to achieve and by when, our assessor was always on hand for advice and guidance and during our sessions was knowledgeable in all aspects of the NVQ process.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There were only a few occasions where we could not attend study days, but this was due to demand of work and/or shortage of manpower issues. Generally the support was good. we were allocated adequate time to complete the various stages, and they were spaced out enough as we did not experience too much too quickly.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider was second to none. Our assessor was always on hand for advice and guidance and during our sessions and was more than knowledgeable in all aspects of the NVQ process. They were patient during the whole process, allowing us enough time to complete the large amount of work required over a relatively short amount of time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • For the most part I believe that the qualification does allow for better performance during my role. being able to closely examine the day to day aspects of my role through the NVQ process, especially with the use of the new I.T equipment needed for my job and the health and safety organisation/processes within Openreach, this helped. There were however parts that I felt were not relevant, the appreciation of Social media and its impact on society, screen shotting emails and using a step recorder to demonstrate how to use the refresh button on internet explorer for example, this is just my opinion however.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There aren't really any activities such as this available. We might have the odd team meeting breakfast every so often but nothing more than that. Over Christmas our manager did give us the option to go for a meal at £35 per head and claim at a later date.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I like how the organisation operates, I like the values it works by, how it looks after and continually educates its personnel. As a company it strives to deliver the best possible service and experience to its customers, always emphasising how important this is and relaying that information to its engineers. I like how people are rewarded for good work, it promotes a great feeling when working for what is a very large company. I never feel like just a cog, but collectively a bigger part of something.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be honest about why you want a career here, do you agree with what the company stands for? Do you agree with its values and goals. If you want to be part of a global telecommunications company that is helping to build a bigger network, connecting people from all over the world and country, then this is the company for you.
