  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my current job role very well. Work wise at the moment I am really busy which provides me with the feeling that I am contributing to my current project. The work team on my current project provided me with ongoing support and also help me expand on my current skills and experience My manager regularly sits down with myself and has one to ones which help me understand how well I’m progressing and enables to understand which areas I can improve on. And externally the Costain apprenticeship team provide me with various opportunities and also support when required. the current apprenticeship programme at times can be very difficult to manage work load and university work but the opportunity of having a job and also getting funding is a excellent opportunity which is worth the hard work which needs to be put to into the apprenticeship programme.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Costain?
  • feel Costain value their apprentices very well and the communication between the apprenticeship manager and the apprentice speaking for myself (and other apprentice which I have spoken to) I feel that the communication and support provided by Costain is very good. I feel at times there could be more ones to ones with the apprenticeship manager and apprentices, but this can be difficult due to the number of apprentices. I feel line managers and management should be involved in the apprentice’s scheme and should have a wider knowledge of the various apprenticeship programmes. In terms of project based I feel the work I do project based is valued by not only management but also other members of staff but I also feel this at times this feedback can be provided to the apprenticeship manager. Also one area I feel I can improve in is tasks delegation. But as a whole I feel the support provided to myself by not only my current line manager, apprentice manager and external staff has been good, but like most things I do think various areas can be improved

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The current scheme I feel is well structured in terms of health and safety training and site induction. I feel costain can provide on site management with more knowledge of the apprenticeship scheme just so this can allow site management to provide more support to apprentices. But as a whole my previous apprenticeship scheme was managed fairly well from Costain apprenticeship managment and college team. As for my new apprenticeship programme at the moment the programme is running okay but due to the programme being the first higher apprenticeship programme carried out by costain there could be improvements made as we get deeper into the year.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I feel the trainer provider CITB can improve on various aspects specially in terms of providing certification, and provided support with NVQ work. During the 2 year Level 3 programme CITB only had monthly one to one sit down which went through the same thing each times and didn’t not provide and benefit to myself. In terms of college teachers / tutors some provided me with some support. My current teachers at My HND College Have been very good with all teacher providing us with brilliant feedback and support.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel Costain provide me with great support in terms of the opportunities provided and support, in my work environment the site time provide me with required support in terms of gaining experience and external the apprenticeship team provide us with a great deal of support in terms of college requirements. I feel communication with HR can be improved on the various packages the apprenticeships are entitled to.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I feel my current salary is fairly reasonable due to travel allowances, general pay package and college cost / education, I feel the pay package its self can be improved due to my day to day work requirements and in relation to other trainee staff who do the same apprenticeship course as myself but work for different companies. But in general I’m happy with my salary and at this stage of my career salary is not my main concern as long as I’m provided with support and opportunities.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Costain have provided me with the opportunity to be involved in various events which I really enjoy especially when I get the chance to communicate with younger generation / secondary school kids who just like myself may not got a great deal of exposure, or be provided with the required information to apply not only for Costain apprenticeships but apprenticeships in general. Costain have also provided me with the opportunity to attend college on a weekly basis which enables me to put my practical skills, and develop them into technical skills I have also attend various other events externally from work which include returning to my old school and provided students with various briefings and one to one talks about the apprenticeship scheme.

  • 9. Would you recommend Costain to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I feel myself personally Costain have developed my skills in various areas to high standard and have provided me with a platform to development. Costain, apprentice management team, and my site team have always helped me and provided me with support when ever required. Costain management have also provided me with great exposure to various events and community related events and also have provided me with the chance to experience various work roles.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • I would advise anyone applying for Costain to have in detail about the various roles Costain do offer as not all roles are construction related, for me a good way to communicate directly with Costain work force / management would be to attend various assessment days which I feel are usually the best way to meet and communicate with the Costain apprenticeship team and manager.
