Maintenance train apprentice Review

My role includes attending college and gaining a rail specific btec qualification. I study 5 days a week and go to the work place in half terms where I assist fully qualified engineers In their maintenance activities on great western railway trains which is a case of replacing things such as brake pads

At the start of my apprenticeship I wasn’t very good at working with others as I wasn’t always confident however since doing activities and tasks in teams my communication skills have got better and I work better in teams. I have also improved my computer skills and Microsoft skills

My programme is really enjoyable and I like what I do when I am in the work place which is only in half terms at the moment. I also enjoy going to college and sharing my time with others with the same interests as myself. We all get on the program is fun

The structure of my program is good and it is organised well. We go to college full time in the first year and my lessons are always productive in the amount of time we get. I think that it could be organised a little bit better by giving us at least a day a week in the work place.

My employers are the supportive type and they always offer the most support. They had a good induction week which eased me into the programme and gave me a good understanding of the company and how it all works. They also check to see how I am getting on with college

In general I receive a good amount of support from my training provider, they check to see if I feel safe at college as well as motivating me to get assignments done. If I do ever feel any concern they are quick to get back to me and help me

The programme that is organised through my training provider helps me with my role as it boosts my knowledge and helps me learn everything I need to know when doing my job. Of course there’s some things that can only be learnt in the work place but most of it is useful

I’m not really at the work place that much so I don’t get involved with the others in any events outside of work although I do think they get together at times like Christmas and go for Christmas dinners or parties with eAchother. I am looking forward to this when I’m on shift

The company is a good place to work as an apprentice as they pay so well and offer such a good apprentice scheme. I feel that I’ve learnt a lot since my time being there and i am progressing well. The company is also set up for the future

When applying I would advise having a good start when they call you and ask for an interview as this is a first impression. Be polite and always friendly. The cv is the main part that needs to be well structured as this is the first thing the company will see of you
