  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves conducting maintenance on all electrification equipment in the different plants such as bridge rectifiers, points heaters, transformers and other equipment. some of the maintenance we conduct, involves taking oil samples of transformer oils which are then taken to a lab to be tested to see if the transformer is in good order.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been able to develop new skills such as how to be able to better read railway diagrams and the components that may be displayed on the diagram. in addition, I have been able to clearly understand the working procedure which must be followed in order to get possession of any plant and equipment.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program as it has exposed me to many different types of working situations from which I have been able to learn new things and interact with many things. in addition, the work provides flexibility which ensures that I'm able to have a balanced work and home life.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well organised as all works that we undertook where planned and where given a period of completion and a clear description may have been given or guidance would have been given in to what was expected in the end result. In addition, if there was any problems or inconveniences, changes were made to the programme and a notification was sent around to ensure all people were aware of the changes.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer provided the supported needed when they realised that I may have needed help based on my performance and change in character. in addition, my employer also provided my with one to one consultations which took place during the year to discuss about how I was doing and to try and help me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • the training provided me with the support needed in the learning hours and outside the learning hours in case if I was falling behind in lessons or if I had not understood something within the lesson when they explained it. In addition, they also provided me with learning resources to help me when revising.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe the training and the knowledge gained from the training provider has acted as a basic understanding of what I had to expect in the work environment. as a result, on arrival in the working environment I quickly became familiar most equipment and standards. this ensures that I was quickly able to start work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are extra curricular activities which apprentices can get involved in such as 5 a side football, fitness changes, dodge ball etc. In addition, if others do not want to take part there are facilities which can be used in the free time such as the gym, the swimming pool and the squash court.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Network Rail to a friend because it provides a variety of carrier paths for all. in addition, it ensures that all members in the company are treated equally and respect as well as keeping safe at all times. in addition, it provides a good chance for new employees to progress in capable to do so.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Network Rail?
  • The tip i would give to those applying to Network Rail is to not hold back and give it all they have. also make sure you are honest in your interviews and all other stages as this will show your true self and why Network Rail should invest into you.
