Cargo Apprentice Review

Building and breaking of cargo units to either go onto the aircraft or upon receiving them from the aircraft. Using a variety of IT based systems to locate and move freight around the warehouse and constantly learning. Using manual handling techniques and equipment to move freight from one location to another whilst sticking to company policies and procedures.

Yes. I have learnt many new skills including, how to train others, people management and IT skills. I have also improved upon existing skills such as my communication skill, my confidence level and my ability to adapt to which ever environment I find myself in. I have also been able to access refresher courses online on Microsoft Office software.

I enjoy learning always have, so for me, this apprenticeship was the perfect environment to do so. All new learning was supported and encouraged. It is also very satisfying to be able to look up at planes flying overhead and think I've played a part in the cargo flying on that aircraft.

An Aviation environment is always organised to an extent but this is where I feel the program could improve. It was still well organised but there is potential to be better. To do this the company would need a dedicated team to manage the apprenticeship as a whole. however saying that, I never felt like I wasn't supported or helped along the process.

A lovely employer to work for, who believes in a work, life balance. Which means if you need the support it is there for you to access. I sadly had a few family issues I needed time off for which my employer was more than happy to support me with.

Personally I didn't need to access any support from my training provider other than them answering some emails every now and then, they did that well. However I also know they help support students with accommodation, in that they help you find a place to stay, so the support is there should you need it.

Very much so. I spot moments in my day to day role where the elements taught in the classroom come into play. That might be conversation skills, being willing to accept different cultures and religions or performance management. It has also taught a wider range of warehouse knowledge, not just specific to my environment in my work place which is a bonus as it gives you a good base knowledge of the industry in general.

There are lots of opportunities to do this through the employer. I was lucky enough to organise and run charity events for Comic Relief, row up the Thames river for Sparks and support our Flying Start charity. As well as attending careers events in schools. I was also nominated for an internal award which really helped boost my motivation to go forward.

Brilliant employer to work for, who supports it's staff through policies and procedures. Lovely environment through supportive colleagues and managers. They also have some great perks to the role, and they really are interested in developing you as a person through training and support. If you are the right person you will go far.

Be honest and open person who is willing to work hard and develop in a company. Do your research, there's nothing we hate more at the interview stage than someone who knows nothing about the company. We like to see people who have researched the company and have retained that information and can recite it back to us at interview. Be a friendly and social person at all times.
