  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Setting Out jobs day to day on site. Work Includes using the total station , dumpy level, GPS. Usually take surveys such as asbuilt surveys. when setting out I speak to my mentor prior to doing so and he checks over my work. I then transfer that data from the surveying kit to my computer and use it on CAD.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have Learned lots of new skills such as how to communicate better in a stressful environment because sometimes on the job it can be stressful so I have learned that communication in stressful times are integral to site success. I have also learned how to set out and how to use CAD

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would say that I enjoy being an apprentice at jn Bentley quite a lot because it can be very rewarding. when going with Bentleys you know that you have job security and they give as much back to you as you give to them. I enjoy working and doing something different everyday.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say that my site based learning is extremely good. my mentor is always helping me and telling me on weak points that I can work harder on. I feel like I learn a lot on site. however I think that the college aspect of the course is badly organised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from all members of staff at jn Bentley. the support mainly comes from the site team and my mentor is my main support. I would like to have more contact with the people from HR who work in the north because they aren't great at tracking my progress.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have much support from my mentor when working towards my qualifications. someone is always there to help me when I'm struggling or even when the site is quiet and all the admin has been carried out I usually am encouraged to crack on with any uncompleted college work that I have.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I do not feel that my qualification helps me a great deal in the sense that I perform better on the job. this is because the btec level 3 that I am currently doing does not really have much similarities to the work I'm doing on site. perhaps an engineering course would've been more useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are many extra activities involved when working at jn Bentley. although I am site based I do not participate because the main extra activities happen in the office such as table tennis tournaments and quizzes on weekly news etc. every year jn Bentley has a sports day in Bradford that the company is invited to.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • this is because working at jn Bentley you are earing whilst you are learning. you are not going to be in debt. I think that jn Bentley offers a good salary for apprentices and the work you carry out on site is fairly interesting and its more beneficial when learning on the job rather than college.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • I would advise people who are trying to get a job at jn Bentley to research the company before the interview. be happy and willing and seem very eager to learn. make sure you are aware of the course and job role you would like and do some research on what that role does prior to the interview.
