  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I write code/test code and review others work. My team build a data mart and so I also answer any queries the client has about the data to help them better understand it. I'm often in requirements meetings with the client to understand any new requirements my team need to deliver in the future.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes tonnes! Soft skills including when and how to use different methods of communication, how to present to internal and external audiences, how to lead a team, how to monitor and manager a budget, how to motivate a team, agile scrum methodologies, what DataOps/DevOps. Alongside technical skills including languages such as Unix shell scripting, PDI, PBA and AWS technologies.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my program and would make the same choice again if I was finishing college and deciding on my next step. Doing a degree apprenticeship is difficult in balancing work commitments against doing university work in my own time - all whilst trying to keep a social life but you are eased into it. The first few years were fine and only my final year is particularly hard to balance everything - but its worth it to gain a carerr, experience and free degree.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme itself does follow a structure but could be improved. When first joinging the programme you have an 8-week ALE (Accelerated Learning Environment) where you live at Aston Uni and learn to code/learn the necessary skills for your role at Capgemini. Following this the degree operates in modules - usually 6 modules per academic year and so 18 in total and you usually do 2 modules every term (3 months). This structure is good but the internal structure within each module could be improved - for example some webinars/on campus days could be better organised.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive support from the central GAP team if I needed them and also there is a GAP community lead within my area who I can go to if I have any queries. My line manager also is very supportive and meets with my university tutor to sign off my work. But having said that, I am left to my own devices to complete my degree.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a high amount of support from the University. The majority of lecturers I have had have been very supportive with quick responses to emails/queries and are happy to have 1-1 skype calls or face to face meets at the university if I need help. My personal tutor is also very supportive.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I would say that 50% of the modules I learn apply to my role - as I am doing the business degree with a technical job role. Therefore I think this question depends on which role you will be doing against which degree. The more your role and degree align, the more the modules will apply at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes! You are like a normal university student so have access to all societies etc. Also within Capgemini there are tonnes of events including games, charity events, meals out with your team, team building events, the work chirstmas party and so on. Lots of things you can get involved with!

  • 9a. Would you recommend Capgemini to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because it has been the best option for me! I would make the same decision again. I am in the final year of my degree now and have gained 5 years of experience, 4 promotions, significant pay increases, and a career, all whilst gaining a free degree. If you like I.T you can't go wrong!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Capgemini?
  • During the interview process just be you! Find out what Capgemini is about, what we care about etc and show why you have a passion for I.T - any experience of code/IT/business sector draw out and showcase! But mainly during the interview process just be yourself and you'll be fine!
