  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is an apprentice Site Engineer, the apprenticeship is 18 months long while I am completing my level 3 qualification in civil engineering. I am currently learning how to take and manage levels using a dumpy level. I also help with maintaining health, safety and welfare on site for example, ensuring the correct signs are in place for the relevant hazards.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to use a dumpy level and take relevant levels on site, I have also learnt how to set out profile boards using the dumpy level and I am in the process of getting a greater knowledge of understanding drawings. My knowledge in construction has massively improved for example, I have a greater knowledge of how important health and safety is.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is well structured all the level 3 apprentices were given laptops when we first started and given a mentor which we would then be working with in the duration of the apprenticeship. However, I changed sites therefore I have a new mentor. My current mentor has created an engineering development plan for the year which I am with him.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • If any support is needed from my employer it is there, I have a training coordinator in HR which is my point of contact if I am unhappy which will listen to anything I have to say and take action accordingly. Since I have started I have had no issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Any support which I need from my training provider is provided however, I would have liked the training provider to have added more structure to the apprenticeship for example, our college units mirrored what we were doing on site. This would be beneficial because, while we are learning the theory in college we would be learning the practical on site.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Knowing the theory behind everything we do in Engineering gives you a crucial amount of knowledge which is required to be able to become a competent site engineer. My goal is to become a competent site engineer and learn the ins and outs of civil engineering therefore, the training provider helps me achieve this.

  • There are many extra curricular activities to get involved in Bentleys, there are constantly emails going around with activities to get involved in. Some examples of these are the racecourse day, escape room night out, Christmas party, 5 a side football and many more. We also try and create our own social events on site.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend JN Bentley to a friend because I have thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship so far and realise that this is the career path I want to take and to progress my way through JN Bentley hopefully achieving a civil engineering degree if possible. The company generally cares about there employees which would be another reason I would recommend.
