  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role involves setting out of points for accuracy using different equipment such as GPS, Total Station and dumpy levels to gain levels on site. As well as engineering I also help out with management tasks such as helping with RAMS and all the required paperwork such as permits to allow work to be carried out correctly.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to use various types of equipment during my time here, mostly the use of GPS work at a reservoir decommissioning scheme we did to gain the correct gradient of the slopes. Also I have learnt how to use the dumpy level and total station briefly. I have also gained confidence in talking to a team, successfully delivering toolbox talks and morning briefings.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my job role greatly. The nature of working outside suits me very well as I personally could not be stuck in the office all day. The support I get from everyone In the company is widely appreciated as if I am ever unsure about anything someone is always there to help.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship is very well organised, I always know what I'm supposed to be doing on what day and where I am based, if I am needed to help on a different site I will be told in advance so I am able to prepare anything for that day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive all the support I need. any questions or help I can ask just about anyone on site, from Operatives to site managers to my line manager. They are always checking up to see if anything further can be done to help me or if I am generally happy.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive all the required support to complete my qualification with teaching, information and formats to be able to complete the workload. I receive support from everyone involved in the apprenticeship scheme with anything needed to support my learning readily available or just a question away. They set us up with all we needed and had it laid out for us all to work with.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It gives me an insight into all the different ways I might be needed to work on site. it gives a good basic knowledge of every task that could potentially crop up in the work place. it has provided me of setting out knowledge and also how to do things like concreting.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are different sports days that get emailed round if anyone wants to participate in. I was asked to play in a 6 a side football tournament and proceeded to be involved with that at the Leeds sports centre. They are often emailing round for different activities such as recently a golf tournament.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • JN Bentley supports you with everything you need to develop and push into a greater job role. Everyone at the company is supportive, friendly and helpful if you have any queries or concerns about anything. As well as this, working in construction is a very good problem solving job, with different tasks being carried out daily. As well as this every job I have been on is very different so it never gets boring.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • When joining JN Bentley never be scared to ask questions or challenge people if you believe they are doing something unsafe. Everyone is here to help support each other and help you develop as much as you can. Complete every bit of work to your best ability and try your hardest as this will allow you to progress as much as you want to.
