  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day-to-day job role is being a site civil engineer, I get involved with the pre-construction activities such as setting out structural positions and giving levels to the build. I also get involved in the construction of structures on a sewage treatment works in which I help check the structure for position and level. Not only do I get the chance to work out on a live construction site I also help out with site office work such as completing inspection and test plans for what has being built on site- which are then passed onto the client and aiding the site manager with delivering inductions and tool box talks to other people on site.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeship I have gained lots of new skills as before I started with JN Bentley I had never worked in the construction industry or out on site. I have developed new skills not only through learning to use the engineering equipment but also how to work in a team and with other people to ensure a project is completed successfully

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship programme with JN Bentley as they have cater to any of my needs and understood any personal circumstance I have whilst still letting me continue with my job role. I have enjoyed my programme because of the fact that I have met new people and gained my own sense of responsibility in the work place.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The apprenticeship programme has been well organised in the sense that I have been sent on many different training courses that have given me the opportunity to develop new skills to help me with my job role, we have also been given plenty of resources by JNB to complete our apprenticeship NVQ qualification. The only negative I can possibly say about the organisation of the programme is that now we have come to the end of our programme we are not entirely sure of our next steps regarding further education.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • During my apprenticeship I received a good amount of support from my employer. any questions that I asked were answered and any needs that I had were catered for. the only negative point to make is the fact that I have never had a buddy during my apprenticeship which I think would of helped me a lot especially when it came to gathering evidence for my NVQ

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • when working toward my qualification I felt that I got a lot of support however the same point that I made above about having support from a buddy would of really helped also reflects on this question. I have been sent on lots of training courses by my employer that have all also helped me toward my apprenticeship qualification

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification that I gained from learning skills partnership has really helped me with my job role. I feel as if going on day release for training has helped give me some context to my job role. the only improvement to make to help me and others perform in our job roles would be to have more structure to the apprenticeship programme and let all the units flow so each member of the group is at a similar stage of completion

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of different extra-curricular activities to get involved in such as the sport and social club, however I do not feel this is accessible for me on site as the activities all start at 5pm and I don't finish work till 5;30 so would not be possible for me to join; however if I was in an office environment it would be interesting to join in. There are also a lot of charity events inside and outside of work hours this is good but in my opinion as an apprentice there are too many too often making it hard to donate or go to all of them

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend JN Bentley to a friend because I feel as if they look after their apprentices well. As a company they are quite flexible to meet any needs you may have and also they invest a lot in every person by offering lots of training courses to help further our career. At JN Bentley there is also a lot off opportunity for progression within the company this is a great incentive for anyone who joins

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • If you apply for a job with JN Bentley the most important thing in my opinion is to be confident and be yourself, this will help a lot no matter whether your working on site or in an office based environment. I would also say make sure you read up on the company background and any schemes that they have been involved with that way you will really know what the job is all about. The key in my opinion is to be committed to the job even in your application.
