  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • in my role, i have experienced both site and office environments. On site its much more practical and hands on using the survey equipment such as the total station, lazer level and dumpy level to get set out. There is also admin work to do with site purchase orders, and many more. Office based is more the setting up of site with files and paperwork.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learn various setting out skills by being with fellow engineers and learning by doing the tasks. I have learnt how to use new tech and set it up quickly and correctly. I have also leant computer skills on how to use the company systems like xpedeon and lotus notes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really do enjoy the day to day challenges I face as this is all completely new to me as a work environment and the construction industry itself. Its good using the survey equipment as it helps my understanding and the more i use it the more confident i feel.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It could be better to give me more understanding of the work i'm doing as I'm slowly picking it up as I go along. The college would could be planned a littler better so i have some knowledge what I will be doing before i get assigned to do a certain taks for Bentley.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am always able to speak to someone who can help me. I have my mentor who is someone close i can contact if i need anything. I have my contracts manager who can sort out bigger issues and HR who are very helpful with other issues i may have.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I received good information when I'm sat face to face with the tutor but it's the quickest over email if I'm struggling but they will always reply so I receive good help with my qualifications. The work i get set its normally covered by the teacher with a work pack

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • very well as I can work on it any time with it being online so i can look at helpful worksheets if i'm stuck on my current tasks. I also have the option to get ahead since all the description of work is online. The work does tie in with the role that i do on site.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are always social events going on from the charity ball to car washes and the lunch times clubs such as the yoga club or running club. There are more sport ones such as football after work on Tuesday, as well as various trips such as go karting and rock climbing.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • A company with friendly people who are able to give relevant support as and when people need it. It is a company t6hat is growing in size and it's reputation is excellent. Its a good philosophy of giving young people the chance as well as using senior team members to the advance and allowing the young workers to learn.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • be yourself as the company is based around making sure you enjoy what you do and that you are a positive happy character who can fit in to the existing work force. You need to be able to adapt into different work environments and be prepared to work with lots of different people.
