  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis, i am involved in multiple tasks, from communicating with my colleagues to also communicating with clients and subcontractors. I am responsible for the payments on a £6 million pound job along with other key documents being my responsibility such as spend profiles and forecast comparisons. I also go out to subcontractors asking for quotes, compare those quotes and then I'll place the order, i then maintain the order and place instructions when they are required. I have been involved in 8 projects all together but now i am focused on one as it is the biggest, and is nearing completion.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have been involved in multiple training courses, learning new skills, such as how to hold behavioural discussions, water hygeine training, the CSCS test and many more. They have made me a much more rounded employee, and if i ever require training or would like to be involved in some, JN Bentley are always keen to put me forward, they always go above and beyond to ensure i receive training that will help my career. I am much more confident and feel like i have found who i am as a person through this apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it and i love working at JN Bentley. I love being part of a team and being seen as a colleague and not as an apprentice, they treat you like you have already qualified, and don't look down on you. It exceeded my expectations as i thought i wouldn't really do anything and wouldn't be involved in a team. It was the complete opposite, they throw you in at the deep end, teach you how to do things and then ask you to do one yourself, this was perfect to get me integrated and to learn everything i need for my job. I love working here.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured, as soon as you start you have an induction and receive immediate training to assist you with the job. They support you throughout and even came to my aid when i was not happy in the role i had signed up for, allowing me to switch job titles and helping me throughout. They have good organisational skills and everyone knows who you are and how best to deal with you.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I always am supported in all forms of being at work, whether it is work related or home related. The company has a great attitude towards it's employees and you are treated like one of their own from the minute you join. You are placed with a mentor, who looks after you throughout the apprenticeship, offering support and teaching you how to do tasks. They will guide you through each process and help in any problem you have. Support is also easy to access and even people you don't know are there for support too.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training provider was very good at providing support, we had a bit of a rough start but then they changed the tutor to ensure we had the best. After that moment we were supported loads and helped through each unit in the NVQ and Diploma, they were a great help and ensured we stayed focused throughout the 18 months so we would actually finish on time.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is very useful as it requires us to provide evidence of us doing the tasks, this means that the qualification is useful as it requires us to go to our mentor and say can i do this, i am then taught how to do the task and hence this is useful at work. Other things i have learnt have allowed me to estimate what will be involved in a pricing for works.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Pretty much every month, there are a variety of events you can get involved in. From charity balls to Go Karting. There is a sports and social team dedicated to put events on for the employees. This allows you to maintain a happy life, you have a good social life even at work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend JN Bentley to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because out of all of my family and friends, no one is as happy at work as me, no one else has the benefits we get, no one has the salary that i have at my age. They treat you like a family here, their policies also focus on caring for their employees, this is amazing, you feel like you're wanted, not like you're another cog in the machine.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JN Bentley?
  • I think that the best advice is to just go and give it your best shot, the assessment days are nothing to fear, be yourself, they just wan't to know if you're the type of person they want to employ. It is a wonderful opportunity and you would be daft to miss out, i am so glad i accepted the job and am involved in this company. They have a good system here and everything they do is for your progression.
