  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice civil engineer, I am involved in the surveying, design, setting out and construction of various different projects. Each day is different, depending on the stage of the project and the details of it, whether its doing a topographical survey for a new road and parking system, setting out building foundations or laying drainage.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • With guidance from the site engineer I've learnt lots of methods of surveying and setting out, with equipment from tapes, levels and profiles to using Total Stations and GPS systems. I've had the opportunity to work on a variety of schemes that has allowed me to work on many different skills

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I work in a great team, that are very supportive whilst providing a fun working environment. I enjoy the work the best when i'm busy with plenty to do. Although there are quieter times, my manager makes efforts to ensure I have plenty to work on and challenge me

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I came into the scheme slightly late, so I had missed the main induction and trainings. The company made efforts to give me separate inductions and catch me up with my trainings, which I have now done most of these. My course seems fairly well organised, and there is good support from the tutor. I have monthly progress with my mentor and support from multiple managers. I get delegated work that may be above my experience, that then gets reviewed by my superiors with feedback given to help my progression.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have access to multiple managers, from ops, site, design and commercial. All of which provide me with any support I may require. This could be with answering questions I may have, teaching me new skills or information and giving me feedback/construction criticism. They provide me with tasks to challenge and progress me

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The tutor for the course is very helpful and answers any questions. The resources can sometimes be confusing and vague, as can the evidence based system. however, assistance from the tutor can solve this, and they often produce alternatives to assist us. The provide any missed work material when on annual leave and help us catch up.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The information provided covers a large range of what role entails. It has given me a good theoretical, and in some circumstances practical, understanding of a lot of the work that I then carry out in my day to day role. I can then build on this with hands on experience

    7/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The framework regularly has social events involving the entire team, these range from company party's, to birthdays, curry nights, go karting and escape rooms. These are all inclusive and give you an opportunity to get to know people that you may not work closely with in office hours. These activities can help build a cohesive working team.
