  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role at BT is working within a team of around 20 members to deliver global voice service. This means that we ensure that all calls are transmitted as required by our customers involving the building and configuration and then maintenance of those platforms. I am involved with configuring the calls

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Within last twelve months, I learnt a lot with openreach. Installation, working on faults, fibre provision, broadband faults and the UG skills, all these skills are gained during this duration. Best bit is the training and then buddying. What you learn in the classroom, you implement in the supervision of the buddy / experienced engineer, this makes the learning more fruitful.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As an apprentice you're very taken care of, you always have an opportunity to ask a question no matter what it is, since communication is so great it leads to great organisation by knowing exactly what you're expected of on different days. University is very well structured with ability to access help from within the organisation as you're given contacts of those whom have previously done the same course.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Communication between not only managers but team members is very great. Always able to ask a question no matter what it is. Managers are very approachable and will always make time if there is a concern that you have. Throughout the course you attend university where lots of support is offered to you in the form of tutors and "buddies" that are old apprentices that have done the course before you and can assist you when required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Excellent. I have achieved everything I wanted to with flying colours and cannot fault the organisation which has led to me completing my units effectively and with good results. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to further or start their journey in engineering and IT and telecoms. I couldn't ask for it to be any better.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me a lot as you need to understand the network just as much as you need to understand how to build one. It helps us communicate better with our customers as if they have questions we can answer them with a bit of explanation behind them if needed.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The company offers a lot of ways to get involved in charity and promotes them heavily. Our wider team makes sure to regularly get people together from the smaller teams from different parts of the country for collaboration and an after work get together. There are opportunities for networking events with senior leaders and those in other parts of the company, there is a regular networking event to bring together apprentices from all over the country where they also organize leadership and soft skill training.
