I worked as a cake maker and I worked in the starter section of the kitchen. I mainly baked, did orders and decorated all the cake for the establishment. When I wasn't making cakes I covered different areas in the kitchen cooking and stocking up food for service and doing prep.
I learned more in depth about the skills and ways to run a kitchen like how to plan for service, make good orders, and about stock control. I also learned about different ways to deal with safety and how to deal with any problems in my work place with people or hazards.
I enjoyed doing the works books and it felt good to be putting my knowledge to something to help my career. I found I could achieve more the. I thought I was capable of and it was great hearing that work I delivered was at a level 4 and really boosted my confidence.
I found the structure really organised, the work books were really easy to follow, and the speaking sessions which I thought I'd struggle at were really simple as well. My teacher was brilliant and would make everything clear which helped me stay on track and able to take on many work books at once.
They encouraged me with the apprenticeship making sure I was doing well, and being sure I had space to do my math and English levels, as well as giving me the time during work to sit and go over my work and do my in kitchen training even when it was a bit busy.
They were helpful and made anything I needed easy to understand. Quick to answer emails and send work books if I completed any quickly which helped me finish my course quickly as well which helped a lot as I like to work at a fast pace and be ahead in everything I do.
My training providor helped me be more aware of what I needed to do to further my career giving me knowledge of ordering, managing staff, managing stock, preparing food correctly, and maintaining hygiene in the kitchen. It also helped my by giving me more self confidence and realise I have the skills and knowledge to go further.
Yes we always having team building activities to modivate staff to do the best they can and show us how our work makes a difference. We also have menu launches where we get to taste the new menu items and learn how they are prepared and show us what is changing.
Yes
It is great having an already paid for apprenticeship program for people who are already in the work force and want to earn qualifications at the same time. It can make a big difference, I believe, in peoples lives and help them achieve a great paying posstion in a business easily.
It can be a very busy environment which can be intimidating but if you are passionate about working in the kitchen, and one day running your own pub or restaurant then it is a great place to learn how, and to further your career quickly, so it is definitely worth giving a go.
