  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I would set up the bar and tills if needed. Make sure the pub is ready for opening. I would serve customers drinks, including cocktails, take food orders and set up tables with cutlery and then taking food out when it was ready. Make sure the tables are cleared and the bar is tidy. Then closing down the bar, sometimes cashing up.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am more confident with handling customers, and how to resolve issues when needed. I learnt a few kitchen skills and general bar presentation. I also helped create displays for new seasons and promotions. I was taught how to cash up and do start/end of day as a team leader.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I loved meeting new people and chatting to all the friendly locals and customers. The work was enjoyable especially when you have team members who you get along with and help. However it was stressful and tiring when we would be understaffed leading to not being able to get a break.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I met with my tutor often during my progress of the course to ensure targets and deadlines were met so I could progress within a good time frame. We focused on one thing at a time, along side my general bar work which helped me understand each topic we were covering and how it related to my work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Since my time there we had multiple general manager change overs so it was difficult to built a proper relationship, however they were all friendly and understanding. There were some who were more supporting and helpful that others who were lazy in complete honesty so that made the work atmosphere difficult.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider was really helpful through out my training. Meeting with her on a regular basis helped me progress easier and steadily. We worked out the best way for me to work efficiently and used this method. She would also check on me via email and text which I found really good.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It make it easier when we would get new staff and managers to know I had this training and could do the things they needed to help the work place progress. It helped when training new stuff and using it to show my support and care as a team leader.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately not we don’t offer these at our place of work so cannot comment on this at present. If we did then maybe depending on the type of activity or the cause then I might have participated or maybe even just helped out. So can’t comment exactly about this.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Long hours, unfair shifts especially being called in last minute and being expected to work without a break. I never got a chance to eat and was constantly stressed. We were always understaffed and Greene king seemed to not care about my place of work as I now found out after leaving that it has been sold which would explain a lot.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • some pubs might actually be better than where I worked since the company might care more about thriving places and not send people to try and fix this place with little support and make their lives so stressful they end up leaving the company all together so just check the reviews on where you’re applying
