  • Daily overall operational management of the pub dining room and kitchen. Staff recruitment development and training. Stock and cash management. • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learning the theoretical side of leadership and management has helped me develop my skill as a manager. I found the sections on different management theories especially helpful as a way to look at my business and Greene King as a whole. I have approached certain areas of my role differently now

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Initially vey much, I found the classroom sessions really interesting however then poor management from Lifetime training soured the whole experience. At least two of my tutors left the company and the service ground to a halt. I then had several remote tutors to set work out of sync with the classroom sessions

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Initially the course was structured however my first tutor left just three weeks into it, I had a remote tutor who was helpful and then was assigned another tutor who cancelled sessions and then did not process my work correctly meaning in the end I had a ‘trouble shooter’ tutor to get me through the last few sessions

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Greene King actively encourage managers to do apprenticeships and the support it there at the start however there is little support going forward, classroom sessions are done in your own time and within my division on Metro Pub Co there is no BDM support at all, you are just expected to get on with things

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My experience with Lifetime Training was appalling. The classroom sessions were OK but not having a permanent tutor meant all the other elements like assignment setting and observations were haphazard and inconsistent. I felt like my concerns were ignored until I was allocated a ‘trouble shooter’ who got me through the end of the course in 12 weeks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have a better understanding of management and leadership theories which are helpful when put into practice. I have a better understanding of people management which helps me set goals and targets for my team. I feel I have more confidence in my management skills since I completed the course

    7/10

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not to my knowledge However Greene King is a huge company and I only work for a small part of it. I would like yo see Metro introduced more extra curricular activities. I think this would definitely be a positive thing. However hospitality is a very demanding industry and most managers don’t have time for extra curricular activities

  • 9a. Would you recommend Greene King to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • As it such a big company there are many different divisions and ample opportunity for diverse work such as local pubs, country hotels, gastro pubs, family venues with children’s playgrounds and high end dining restaurants. Greene King also reward staff well with different benefits, discounts and incentives. There is also opportunity of self development

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Greene King?
  • To research thoroughly all the brands and divisions within Greene King so that you find the right one for you. To take advantage if all the training and self development offered. I would also advise that you really show outstanding customer service skills because the customer really is the focus at Greene King
