  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work along side the Senior Estimator on low price tenders. This involves me sending and managing subcontractor enquiries as well as reviewing and importing the returned quotes onto our system. I review the ITT documents when received from the client and build an understanding of the project; enabling me to put together contract preliminaries and CP's for the bid process.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned how to use estimating software, ConQuest. I have also been receiving training on measurements which is building my understanding of the construction process. I can independently do basic take-offs for externals, painting and decorating, external windows and doors etc. I can identify when something needs clarifying and its impact on the tender.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My time is split between work and college (1 day/week). At work i receive training specific to my role as an estimator. College gives me a more in depth knowledge about specific elements of the construction industry. Together, I feel these will provide me with a great knowledge base to move my career forward in 3 years time, having completed my HND.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The new OneHR Goals have made my training far more structured. It is now a goal for myself and the Senior Estimator to train on a regular basis about specific elements of the estimating role. This includes my understanding of the ITT documents and also in depth training on SMM7 and how to put together a full, professional bill of quantities.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is extremely busy but still finds time to answer questions I have. He is always happy to sit down and explain something; using diagrams etc until he knows I've understood. However, I feel like my workload is having a negative affect on my college work and I worry that my grades, currently averaging at a distinction, will slip due to lack of time.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As question 5, I feel like my currently workload is excessive for a trainee role. The workload for college requires me to spend at least an hour every night and all weekend to keep at my current grade goal as distinction. While unofficially I am awarded a half day a week to do college work during working hours, this is subject to current workload which is never permitting.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I find the college course is evenly split in its usefulness. 50% of what I do at college is extremely useful in helping me understand construction techniques, materials etc. However, we have many modules that, while valuable to the overall picture, are not used in the role of an estimator.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many ways that Engie promotes healthy lifestyles; positive work environment, gym memberships etc, but seldom am i informed of any social activities, sports team or professional networking events, with the exception of the mandatory volunteering day. However, this is not to say that Engie does not provide these, but I have not come across them.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Equans to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Engie to a friend because they have been supportive in my career choice and the paths I wish to take my training in. Engie is an ever expanding company that will invest in peoples future. However, working while studying is high pressure and high stress, so be ready to sacrifice your social life for success.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Equans?
  • Be yourself. Don't be intimidated by status; the senior management team and directors are extremely thoughtful, caring and fun people. Do your research and be enthusiastic about the company and your future. If you're invested in Engie, Engie will invest time and money into your career where a lot of companies won't.
