  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I would conduct audit work assigned to me by my in-charge/manager. I would interact with the client daily in order to get the audit evidence that I needed in order to complete my testing. I would also interact with my team and with the Flying Start Placement 1 Students I would coach them and help them conduct their audit testing. The projects that I was involved with was the audit of a CIPS client and also audited some retail authorised investment funds.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course is very well organised. This is demonstrated by the fact that every year at the start of university we have an induction meeting and are briefed on the year ahead of us. We receive training prior to going on placement which enable us to hit the ground running. I am a peer mentor for the first year flying starts making it easier for the younger students to make the jump from a levels to sixth form.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive lots of support from our employer. We are assigned a career coach at the start of placement. We also receive a placement buddy who we can go to with any problems. We are given plenty of support and there is a major focus on mental health within the workplace which is reassuring to see.

  • Flying Start Students receive plenty of support from ICAEW. We receive all our work material free of charge, we can call into webinars if we are interested in the event. • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe what we learn on placement and university is highly relevant to what we do on a day to day basis. And hopefully depending on exam results, we will get a job and continue to work in the Edinburgh Office. What we learn at university is very relevant to the audit work that we conduct.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are plenty of extra-curricular activities to get involved with at work. These activities range from Five-A-Side Football, Squash, Netball, Basketball, Yoga. There are also opportunities to go on the Rugby Tour, Hockey Tour and Netball Tour. We also have month end drinks at the end of every month. They are all voluntary events and you can go to these events as and when you want to. There is plenty for you to do but you have to be first to take opportunity of the activities provided to you.
