  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I deal with the faults that occur in the network. Also maintenance in the telephone exchanges. A job pack will be emailed to me and the PTO that I would be assisting with the routing of the fault it is then my job to locate the fault using specific software to get the customers back in service.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since joining Openreach I have learnt many new skills during the 13 week training course. We learnt the different cable types used in the underground network also the tie cables used in the exchanges to connect to the equipment. we was trained on how to strip the different cables using the correct tools. health and safety was covered a lot during the course because of the nature of the job role.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I can honestly say I really enjoy coming to work learning new skills. Everyday I can say I go home and feel really good on what I had learnt that day from the experienced engineers. All the experienced PTOs and jointers have many years in the company and have a lot of knowledge to share.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel the structure of the apprentice programme I am on is well planned and was organised very well. All new recruits were made to feel at home. are train tickets were booked and sent to our home address. all the relevant information was provided to make us all ready for the course.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive constant support from my line manager and the faults and maintenance team I am in. If I have any quires or anything I am not to sure about I have the right people to go to. I can even access my work laptop for relevant training material if needed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive as much support as I need. my training assessor is always an email away from any support I need. Going through all of my items of work towards my qualification my assessor will over look my work if anything needed amending he would notify me before submitting any work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Using my qualification out in the field has helped me perform so much better. Its helped me on my knowledge on using relevant software to make things run so much more smoothly. I can now access training material if I am in doubt I can now even order safety tools for work purposes.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • we receive a loop article everyday with upcoming events sometimes we even have team meetings with we are treated to breakfast. This year is Openreach first Birthday as FND and the year has gone very well so [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] is treating all the FND teams a day out. I'm hoping paintballing.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Just a brilliant company to work for. The people are all so welcoming. you receive all the training and safety equipment to get the job done. These also someone willing to help if you have any problems. Its a job where you feel good in helping you customers making sure they stay connected.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Don't wait just apply and enjoy every moment. the training was my highlight meeting the new recruits you build friendships and these will be the new generation of telecommunication engineers. Your given all the support and all the tools for you to grow as a great engineer. Everyday is something new.
