  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I do a range of jobs in the ABA department. I do accounts preparation for a variation of clients. Some clients are big enough to have their own accounts team so they provide us with a fully balanced Trial balance when others just give us income and expenses and then we put them together into a working paper to put together the accounts. I also do IXBRL Tagging and Vat returns.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have developed many skills since I started. I have learned communication through both listening and speaking. I've learned how to prepare accounts, IXBRL Tag, prepare VAT returns and learned the skills needed to pass my first three exams. I've learned the importance of team-working which has been shown with how much people in my department have helped me since I started.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have very much enjoyed the programme so far. The culture in the company is very good where everyone is very friendly and socialable but are also all very willing to help me when I am struggling with something. The work is very engaging and I feel I've been given a variation of jobs to help me develop.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. I work in the office for four days a week and then go to college on the other day where I study AAT. They book me on all the college courses for me and do the same for my exams at work. For office work, I am booked onto all my jobs well in advance.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I am very happy with the support I receive. Everyone in my department is always willing to help me when I am struggling. This was especially the case in the first few months when everything was new to me. With exams, when I do have problems there are other people in the office I can talk to who have done those exams in the past.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I am happy with the support I receive. I go to BPP college where they have an achievement ladder on their website which gives plenty of question practice to help me prepare for my exam. My only criticism is that some of the solutions on the achievement ladder are incorrect.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification has helped me hugely in my role. When I first went to college I didn't even understand debits and credits. Now I have learned this, it has helped me in accounts preparation and IXBRL Tagging. My most recent Indirect tax exam has helped me when I do VAT returns.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, every Tuesday there is football at the local astro turf. There are often opportunities to go to networking events. There is usually a social event every month. We have had pizza and pool night, beer bus, the Christmas party and sports day. These events are great for getting to know people on a social level which you don't often get the chance to do at work.

  • 9a. Would you recommend RSM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a very good opportunity to earn valuable experience working in an accountancy firm whilst also working your way through the AAT qualification. I've been very impressed with the support I have been given and how much I have developed over the past seven months. The culture in the office is also very good.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to RSM?
  • Make sure that you have done your research about the company which you can show off in the assessment centre and interview. This includes our values and exactly what the role they are applying for involves. I would also suggest working on in their a levels so that they get the grades to meet the requirements.
