  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • in my role I go on site at least two days a week to gain hands on experience of a civil engineer using surveying equipment. I also go in to the office the remaining days to learn about the work done in the office by completing the permits to digs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my knowledge about civil engineering by being shown all of the procedures done by engineers on and off site. I have also learned a lot about engineering in college where I have learned about: Surveying, Site work, Mechanics, health and safety, materials and maths, this has helped me on the job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the program a lot as I enjoy being able to vary from on site work to office work. I also enjoy going to college as it helps me to understand the work I undertake on the job. I also enjoy the program as the people on the project are very helpful.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the program I am on is very well structured as the week is broken up in to 3 parts for me as I go to college 1 day, I go on site 2 days the I go to the office 2 days. I think this is a good structure as I learn all aspects of the job.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my employer as I have progress meetings very often with my line manager and I also get set targets for me to go for and I always get help with my work if I need it and my question will always be explained well until I have a good understanding.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Citb give me a lot of support as I have reviews with them 4 times a year. in the reviews I get set targets to meet in and out of college which I am encouraged to meet. the reviewer also always asks me how I think I can improve my skills.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • the qualification has helped me as it gives me a basic understanding of the work I carry out on the job. I also feel that I have a lot more knowledge about civil engineering than I had when I just started. the qualification has been very helpful to me as it helps me on the job.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there has not been many extra curricular events for me to attend although there has been a couple of nights out at Christmas and some charity for example there was a Christmas jumper day as well as a bake sale all to raise money for a chosen charity. there was also Christmas raffle for charity.

  • Yes

  • I would recommend Costain to a friend as my experience so for has been very enjoyable and helpful as I never knew that I would learn so much in a short period of time as well ad enjoying my self at the same time. also the people in work will always give you a hand when your stuck as they are very helpful.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Costain?
  • I would encourage people to try hard to learn about the company before they apply because having the knowledge of the company and the industry will help you not only in the application and interview but on the job as well. also try be the best person you can be.
