  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am involved with the broking of insurance programmes for oil and gas companies. This includes liaising with clients and meeting them to find out about their insurance requirements, preparing market documentation and analysing their demands and needs to ensure that our policies fit their requirements. we also arrange other policies such as employers liability and personal accident and travel.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I am nearly at DIP CII now, which is a good qualification to have and is recognised internationally. I have also learnt a lot about commercial and specialist insurance contracts and the best solutions for clients, dependant upon their circumstances and requirements. My knowledge of commercial insurance contracts has also developed a lot.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my job itself very much, and the team that I sit within are very helpful and supportive. I do, however, find the programme to be quite restrictive, and controlling with minimal flexibility. Also, I don't think it allows individuals to be rewarded as much as they perhaps should when over performing and working hard.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There have been some problems with the organisation of the programme from the start. Throughout I have had several learning coaches which has been a confusing experience. in addition to this, we had issues with the CII tutors in that they weren't adequately qualified to deliver the sessions. I think there is some work to be done on redesigning the programme and planning ahead.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • In terms of my direct line management, I receive a lot of support and I am very happy. WTW have paid for the CII qualifications and offered a lot of support here. The working hours and availability to do these qualifications has greatly benefitted me overall, and this wouldn't have been possible without the support of WTW and my team.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Personally, I find the support from the training provider to be lacking. There is a general understanding that the cohort of apprentices will learn best the same way, and when others wish to learn differently, this isn't well received. There needs to be more personalisation and flexibility (where necessary and appropriate) built into the programme. I have progressed quite unaided through the CII qualifications, and the support from the training provider, although gratefully received, hasn't always been the best it could have been.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Yes I do. The CII qualifications have been very beneficial in my role and I am looking forward to shortly receiving my DIP CII, with a view to progressing with the ACII. I have been able to relate a lot of the qualifications from the CII into my job role itself. in terms of the government qualification of Level 4 Insurance professional; instead of this assisting me with my development, this has actually been a time consuming evidence exercise. I can understand the need for it, and the support from Amanda at the Growth Company has been exceptional, however the process is very onerous and I cant actually see the direct benefits in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I do try and get involved in out of work events, although some I find can be a waste of time as opposed to a direct benefit. The CII sessions have been very insightful and you can tell these have been arranged with a lot of effort. However some of the WTW events have been a little lacking in terms of content.

  • 9a. Would you recommend WTW to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • For someone that is hard working, intelligent and wanting a successful career, I would recommend WTW. the company does offer a lot of support and this is a very good starting step within the industry. The people I work with are very friendly and supportive also, and I think this is the culture that is promoted throughout WTW.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to WTW?
  • Ensure that you have researched the company in sufficient depth before heading into the interview, and also have a brief knowledge of the insurance industry to be able to back up what you know about WTW. Be sure to come across with a lot of enthusiasm and most of all relax during the interview.
