Day to day I participate in reviews of balance sheets of various entities within the business. I also review and substantially test Sarbanes Oxley controls within the business to ensure completeness and effectiveness. I do audit based testing of the balance sheets. I am also occasionally responsible for planning reviews and overseeing team members.
I've massively improved my computer based Microsoft skills specifically excel. I am able to do advanced formulas and data entry/analysis that I couldn't do before. I have improved my report writing skills and methods of communication with wider stakeholders. I have also improved my ability to speak with confidence to senior managers and stakeholders and present results to those interested.
I absolutely love my programme. All the managers I have had have been exceptionally supportive of the importance of my studies and have helped me to balance the importance of work and studies. I get study leave before exams and my manager is flexible as to how I wish to use this. They make it possible to achieve the best I can in both my academia and my practical experience.
Our programme is really well structured, enabling us to periodically move around the business and the different roles of finance whilst providing sufficient time in the role to gain real knowledge and experience. The programme ensures we grow in confidence and experience sufficient to support membership of CIMA. We are also provided with regular pay reviews to ensure we align to market expectations and growth.
BT is a fabulous employer. All managers I have had have been extremely supportive and concerned with not just my work but also my personal wellbeing. They've been flexible around my studies and exams and assisted me when I've been struggling. They've also supported me in some really difficult personal experiences and supported me enough that I haven't fallen behind.
BPP are regularly in contact with me to ensure I am on track with my courses. They monitor my online achievement ladder to make sure I'm moving in line with expected time limits but if I'm not they provide additional support to get me back on track. I've found them really helpful
The financial accounting elements of my qualification and management accounting element are both hugely beneficial as they provide methodologies and core knowledge needed that are applicable in my day to day tasks. I don't feel like the economics and organisational elements are as beneficial but that is more than likely due to my role rather than the relevance to finance overall.
We do lots of team socials like going for meals but there aren't many sports based activities to get involved in. We are fortunate to have a gym on site which is encouraged. We regularly have professional networking events with people in the business but not necessarily externally. Social activities around the business aren't massively common
Yes
I absolutely adore my job and the people I work with. I am so well supported and have made such great friends as well as life long peers. The company is at the forefront of industry and there is great exposure to a huge range of roles and opportunities both in and out of the main environment.
Do your research and make sure it's the place for you. BT is the kind of environment where if you work hard for them they'll work hard for you and you'll reap the rewards if you really want to apply yourself to your role and studies. It's a fairly big corporation but don't be afraid because people really do count here.
