  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a quality engineer I provides assurance that the quality requirements are being met. This includes providing assurance to my project that products and services meet customer specifications and satisfy stakeholder requirements. When delivering this I also identify and facilitates the delivery of quality improvement programmes as well as ensuring the quality management system is effective, efficient and implemented, and aligns with the Quality Programme. Some of my daily activities include: • Quality management system oversight and advice. • Confirming that products/outputs/deliverables meet specified requirements - through certification, validation and/or verification of inputs, processes and /or outputs • Collating, monitoring and trending the quality of delivery performance in their area of responsibility using performance indicators (KPIs). • Working with management to resolve quality issues and ensure effective implementation of the quality programme • Using performance data and audit/assessment findings to undertake root cause analysis and identify quality improvements (including corrective and preventive action). • Investigating quality related concerns and events, and identifying appropriate corrective/preventive action. • Escalating quality issues to senior management through the head of EHSQ or Head of Quality as appropriate. • For measuring, monitoring and reporting ‘cost of failure’

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed a number of skills whilst undertaking my apprenticeship; 1. Public Speaking 2. Professional writing skills e.g. emails, minutes, agendas etc. 3. Communication skills 4. Technical language 5. Trained auditor 6. Trained Investigator (BCIs, MIs) 7. Trained in quality planning 8. Trained in Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • I enjoy all aspects of my programme including work and university.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As we are the first quality degree apprentices at Sellafield Ltd, there have been a few difficulties with regards to the structure and organisation. However, as we have proceeded through the course they have taken on board our suggestions on a number of occasions to improve for future years. On a whole our apprenticeship is very well organised and is fully supported by the higher management.

  • We have received a huge amount of support for our employer and management within our capability.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Gen2 provide a number of support functions in order to support us through our degree.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Most of our degree does not help me to directly perform my job, however, the degree does help with the context of some tasks we are asked to complete.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am apart of a number of professional institutes - Charted Quality Institute (CQI), Women In Nuclear (WiN), NucSig. As part of these groups I have attended a number of professional networking events both in my local area and across the country. E.g I attended a CQI workshop in London on "The Cost of Quality". However, I do not attend any extra-curricular that is directly related to Sellafield Ltd.
