  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Each day I am expected to provide administration support to my current directorate, however, I have also been given the responsibility to provide secretarial support to 3 of my colleagues. This involves diary management, setting up meetings, taking minute meetings and providing them with any resources they may need for meetings, such as information packs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since I have started in September 2018, I have developed lots of new skills. I have been shown the importance of meeting deadlines and have became more and more organised as my apprenticeship has gone on. My IT skills have been enhanced as I use computers to complete my work each day, Sellafield also gave me the opportunity to do my IT Functional Skills with my training provider Gen2.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • After finishing my GCSE'S I was unsure what career pathway to chose, I applied for lots of different apprenticeships such as business admin, customer service and IT support. I got offered a business admin placement at Sellafield and I love coming to work each day as you never get asked to do the same thing, everyday you get faced with new challenges and opportunities.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As well as coming to work each day, you have coursework to complete in order to get your NVQ, the assignments you have to complete from Gen2 fit in with your work, such as an assignment about diary management. You are provided with a Sellafield workbook and have lots of tasks to complete after your full 24 months.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The business admin scheme owners have regular meetings with you to ensure you are happy at work and have no issues. During these meetings they check that you are managing your workload as well as completing your workload for Gen2. My line manager and colleagues have regular meetings with me to make sure that I am managing and if I ever have any issues they are my go-to's for help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I attend Gen2 for support sessions twice a month. Between these sessions we are given assignments to complete, if we have any issues with these we can bring them up to our assessor on the day of the support session. However, they also encourage you to phone them or email them if you need urgent support or guidance.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Each Gen2 assignment that gets set fits in with my everyday work. One of the assignment titles which I have completed is Health and Safety in a business environment. This assignment allowed me to refresh my knowledge but also put extra research into it, so therefore I now know how to make my working environment safe whilst following guidelines.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of opportunities to take part in. During your apprenticeship you are encouraged to take part in as much as you can! I am currently involved in 'National Apprenticeship Week' with my training provider, however Sellafield has encouraged us to do this. There are different opportunities through the year such as 'Tall Ships'.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Sellafield Ltd to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I joined Sellafield Ltd straight after Year 11 and it is one of the best things I have done so far. You quickly adapt to working life, get paid, get bonuses and holidays just like all the other staff. Earning whilst you learn is such a good motivator to enhance your knowledge!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
  • When applying for Sellafield Ltd you need to take time to prepare a personal statement and CV. You are also required to take a aptitude test. It is worth taking practice tests online & it is important to prepare before your interview to ensure that you are confident and knowledgeable about Sellafields nuclear history.
