  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Apprentices undertake placements within different functions of project management; project management, project controls, construction and risk. Workload therefore depends on which area you are based in. For project management it mainly involves attending progress meetings, monitoring progress and dealing with any issues that arise. In my final placement now I have my own packages of work i must manage

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have also developed a number of interpersonal skills that are key to being a successful project manager, including communication skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Enjoy it a lot as it is what I have wanted to do since I was in sixth form. In terms of the structure of my scheme, it has been highly beneficial for me getting both the education and workplace learning. This has allowed me to apply the knowledge as I progress.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Generally well organised, training always booked etc. However sometimes people have issue with placements. The structure in terms of how the programme runs over the 4 years is good. Training and education is generally well spread out so the pressure is relieved slightly. The degree starting after a year is good as you have a foundation knowledge prior to starting.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support available and nothing is ever too much. Given mentors upon joining the organisation who are there for support and advice. Organisation are also willing to support higher education requests. Support is available from the PM capability, as well as the apprentice training team and within our placements.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Meetings with assessor on regular basis to review work currently on-going against competencies. These meetings are usually scheduled on a weekly basis and involve talking through any tasks we are currently working on and the accompanying evidence documents. These face to face meetings are good for me as I work better explaining this way.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • 100% yes, it has given me the background knowledge in order to complete my role. The competency based work involves apprentices seeking work to satisfy each competency, therefore we are getting a wide range of work. Also the university degree elements again allow us to further develop our project management skills

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are professional networks set up within the organisation in which you can join. There is an apprentice council set up that involves two apprentices from each scheme to join and discuss apprentice related issues. There are events such as tall ships for apprentices. This is a sailing event which helps to develop apprentices team working skills. There are no sports teams.

  • Great company, support is there if you need it. Be sure to familiarise yourself with the site early on as it helps to know where the different plants are and how they operate.
