  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a scientific degree apprentice, there is a combination of scientific and technical work that is done each week for my allocated department. Along side this, the company allows day-release to attend college for training each week; my field is in Applied Chemistry, and this degree is also paid for by the company.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As well as the programme's degree that I am currently earning, I have developed my communications skills after coming straight from a school-based environment. This has allowed me to become more effective in an adaptive workplace environment. My technical skills (including use of IT and relevant software) has also improved,

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy day to day life in my place of work. I get on well with all members of my team and other colleagues involved with where I work. I am personally fascinated by the degree of scientific/chemical complexity with respect to the various processes that occur. New learning is achieved almost every day.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In terms of my place of work, it is very well organised with respect to training, health and safety protocols and the ability to go on secondments with other departments if I wish. My company has also given me the opportunity to gain chartership with the RSC, and the required competencies along the way.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is support in all aspects of work life, all to protect health, safety and general well being. This can be done by line management, assigned mentors, heads of department and training leads. This support is very plentiful and very useful in ensuring I progress in and enjoy work also.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • In general I enjoy college, and receive support from our lecturers. I feel that more support could be given by allowing feedback on assignments and exam results. In addition, better advice or preparation could be given to help us understand what will be required in future modules and/or exams.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification definitely improves my understanding of chemistry in all of its relevant fields. This allows for greater confidence in my place of work/my role, because there is a lot of chemistry involved and analysis required for the huge variety of chemical/physical processes that occur where I am based.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is several networking events which are organised by leads at work but also by other students. Examples are charity events, RSC sponsored activities to develop us professionally but also student councils for each relevant scheme. It is also known for team building exercises and occasionally out of bounds courses.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Personally I enjoy my place of work very much, and the processes that occur are of personal interest. It allows me to earn a wage at the same time as getting my degree or qualification - and guarantees a job at the end. There are also so many opportunities available for everyone.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sellafield Ltd?
  • Make sure you are aware of the competencies (e.g. qualifications, and skills) that would be required for your particular application. Do some research as to which general area you would like to go into, which will be based on your interests or professional desires. This will allow for further opportunities but also a more interesting experience.
