  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • my job title is customer service engineer, working for Openreach im employed to be able to provide, fault and fix phone lines. This is a customer faced roll. We also drive commercial vehicles which advertise the company and that ties in with our appearance where we need to be in uniform and be of a smart appearance with excellent customer service skills. On a day to day basis I do a vast array of jobs from working I cabs to climbing poles to being in the exchange, not one day is the same and the challenges I face are amazing. It is a brilliant feeling to know that when you have done a great job and got the customer working is defiantly job satisfaction.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The skills that I have worked to gain are NVQ, B Tech, essential skills wales. I have never done anything like this for work or for fun, I have learnt and picked up skills I thought I would never be able to do, for me from the moment of starting work to the point where I am at now has been an amazing journey, in training we have to do a lot of mandatory training courses which a lot of these are periodically on going training, in which we never stop earning. There is plenty of other training courses to go on, for example fibre to premises course and under ground training course for when we have to lift up the covers in the roads. We have also done our sign lighting and barrier course and done the course so we can also go on to building sites, these qualifications are external courses.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have received all the support that I required to do my training, and this has continued and been maintained to a very high standard. I never had a problem from my coach/ assessor and found that the general attitude of the staff to be one of " if its needed the its there". I've always found that if I needed access to anything it has always been given to me. I have thoroughly enjoyed doing this and have no regrets doing it.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have the ability to do voluntary work if I want to, have the option to join a gym, have the invites to join in several activities that the company provide out side of work. the working hours that we do are amazing and that gives me the choice to be able to do what I wish after work. the company also gives me the option to be able to apply for other events out of work, all in all the company is very employee friendly when it comes down to the social aspect of the job.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • From where I was to where I am now has been an amazing journey, I have been given all the options and opportunities to succeed in my role and progress further in my career. I find that I have found employment from a company that acknowledge that im human and not a robot, and is there to support me through my journey, I would recommend anyone to give it a try.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • take your time, make sure to read and practice all aspects that the application process asks you to do, relax, and try to enjoy it. on assessment days go smart in a suit, not jeans jumper etc, go clean, ask questions while you are there, make notes so you can read them later, it can all be overwhelming, never be shy about who you are and what you have done, don't brag be honest. I think I would of liked to be told more about the challenges and what is expected from the job.
