  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My apprenticeship is a Level 3 in light vehicle maintenance, as well as multiple add on courses for HGV, hydraulics, electric and hybrid vehicles. Day to day I can be servicing or maintaining various vehicles, from DAF trucks to AMG Mercs and at other times on quieter days I will do collection and delivery of vehicles.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • 100% Mechanics was more of a hobby for me before, performing work on my own cars and learning new skills. But it couldn't have prepared me for actually working in the trade. Now my skills have developed tenfold, including learning diagnostic procedures.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is fantastic, college is 5 times a year in two week intervals. Every time I go it is with the same 14 other students, which is great because you build great friendships from this where you can learn skills or take on knowledge from your pees. The college itself we go to is amazing, has everything we need and great staff. I didn't expect this course to be as good and well thought out as it is.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • Well valued, I assumed being an apprentice in the motor industry I would be subject to pranks and comical abuse as the stereotype is in the industry. That wasn't the case, I feel respected and appreciated here. That isn't to say we don't have banter still.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well organised, before we started work we was given an induction at the college and the accommodation we would be staying at whilst there, This gave us an insight as to what to expect when we are at college, the sort of work we will be doing and how to deliver our work. It works well around our work life, and we have constant support when at college or at work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A lot, before my first visitor from my assessor I was worried with how much work I need to provide from the my time in the workshop. Once he arrived, everything was explained and it felt like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders and we created a structured plan for my written work

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Plenty, if I need some time to catch up on college work or produce a piece of work for my course they are always happy to give me the time to do so. If I ever have any problems with tasks I have in the workshop everyone is always happy to lend a helping hand.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Very well, starting salary is 3-4 times the amount of most other apprenticeships in this category as well as yearly pay rises. The pensions scheme is amazing and you even have the opportunity to buy shares without a loss.

    10/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes there are always opportunities for corporate or charity events, or even helping the company test out its own new software. There is even opportunity to visit the British TV awards.

    10/10

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The huge skill set that can be gained from this apprenticeship is enough by itself, but adding the fantastic pay and other benefits it makes BT a great company to work for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Be honest, be yourself, be creative when answering questions. List all of your experiences in and out of the workplace even if it isn't directly relevant to the job you are applying to.
