  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Job title: Flying Start Degree programme - FS3, Aberdeen Day to day I am performing substantive testing as part of the external audits offered by the assurance department. This involves interacting with both colleagues as well as client contacts. I am also responsible for offering coaching to the most junior member of the audit team. In the Aberdeen office I tend to work on clients for a period of 2-4 weeks before moving onto to a different job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As part of the programme I am working towards becoming a chartered accountant with the ICAEW (ACA qualification). There are internal training courses offered depending on what engagements you are booked to e.g. PCAOB training I have developed my "soft" skills set through working in a professional environment and engaging with clients.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work can be difficult at times and the work load is large. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with a variety of people and overall the individuals I have worked with have been very friendly.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by PwC?
  • PwC have introduced overtime pay to recognise the work people put in. In addition to this, the feedback process makes you feel valued when you receive positive comments for the work performed.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is extremely well structured. We study at University from September-December and April through to June.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We receive support from the University in the form of personal tutors as well as the lecturers and programme team.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Whilst on placement we also receive support from our people manager and buddy at PwC.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • PwC cover our accommodation costs whilst on placement and we also receive a substantial salary for the work performed.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • It is difficult to comment as we are on placement during busy season meaning everyone is very busy and there is little opportunity for social activities. However, there is a beverage trolley at the end of every month which allows us to get to know everyone in the office.

  • 9. Would you recommend PwC to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Whilst this programme can be demanding it offers excellent opportunities. In addition, it is a good way to learn as you can apply the academic knowledge you have picked up from University and apply it to real life situations.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC?
  • I would encourage everyone to do extensive research before applying to this programme. If you are really motivated to become a chartered accountant it is a great route but people should consider the pressure before signing up to do three busy seasons (at least) with one of the big 4.
