  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in Employee Services. My daily tasks include adding new starters, updating BMS and some other Payroll stuff. I interact with other teams within the floor I work on. We interact with the schools outside of the organisation. My responsibilities are making sure things are up to date with the schools in regards to all the details that we have so we can pay them each month.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt how to use online filing systems and a program call BMS which we use to keep each persons details and payroll etc. I've done several different internal training courses from the Council and from Engie these include: health and safety, excel and word courses. I've learnt different professional skills like how to write an email professionally and in the right manner.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy working for the company as there are many perks of working for a big company like getting free gifts and vouchers. I do enjoy working with my team even though sometimes it can get a bit frustrating as I might have a quicker way of doing something but they wont change the way they work. I didn't really have any expectations when I can in as I didn't know what to expect part from knowing what I'd been told. I am enjoying it at the moment but I couldn't see myself doing this full time for the rest of my life.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Equans?
  • We do get treats from our managers to say thank you every month around running payroll as I can be a stressful time of the month. We don't get much appreciation apart from our managers as with it being a massive company its hard to do that, however we do get some appreciation from the council for doing what we do. We get lots of thank you off schools for doing what we do and dealing with what we are doing and the stress the schools give us.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • For induction I was put on the recruitment side of things but I was just thrown in at the deep end to see what I could do and we went from there. In the first few months I got plenty of both face-to-face training and also online training from Engie and the council. trying to fit studying in can be hard as people want me to do other things so I do mostly haver to do it outside of work and I don't particularly have much time out of work for it with having family obligations. I get given all the rubbish takes like I haven't done a contract since I moved sections around 3 months ago instead I'm filing peoples work away with I don't think is very good use of my skills.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I find it hard to get a hold of my tutor as she doesn't reply to emails very quickly so I could get an email at 10:30 at night from her. We do get support from her but its mainly do it yourself and ask if you need the help.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get a fair bit of help off my team leader if my mentor isn't in or if I have a problem I can always go to her for the help and guidance. it can be hard to get support if people aren't in or have gone home for the day which means sometimes its hard to find someone to go to if I need the help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As I live at home I only pay board into an isa count every month. I get a lift into work and I get the metro home but with the new pop blue card it only costs me a pound to get home. it doesn't really cost me anything daily cost wise as I normally bring in a pack lunch. I don't drink or smoke so anything that I don't need for travel or board I put into a savings account. the location is alright but could do with better transport but apart from that its in a good location.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There aren't really many in relation to the local community,but there are benefits like getting discounts at shops, restaurants and gyms.

  • 9. Would you recommend Equans to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The are a good company to work for as long as they get your pay right. they also give out vouchers if they have made an extremely good profit that year so everyone is getting a £15 shopping voucher. There are lots of perks to like My Engie have lots of deals as well and working for the council with having a more card.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Equans?
  • Get your forms back ASAP and also check what pay they are giving you as I was put on a pay 2 grand under what I was meant to be put on which was annoying but I'm getting the money back. the interviews were very relaxed but that might have been due to the people I was being interviewed by. There are many opportunities with working with an international company you just have to find them.
