Apprentice engineer Review

After progressing through the advanced apprenticeship program onto the higher apprenticeship program my responsibilities changed. Now I am more directly responsible for projects, managing my own time and reporting back to my seniors about progress. The educational opportunities are also greater because my understanding is better. My main role is with the Technical Centre. We test machines for customers and test new product development machines. We are responsible for testing machines to marine society standards for insurance companies.

I have a far better understanding of both electrical and mechanical skills, in practice and in theory. I have learned about how gensets and the national grid respond to different types of electrical load, and the effect this can have on customers and mechanical components. I have also learned how much goes into re designing a product known and respected around the world for its reliability.

The apprenticeship program here gives me the opportunity to find my own path and to pursue areas of interest. It also offers as much guided learning as I need outside of an academic setting

I do feel valued. The projects I am involved in are very sensitive. I am treated the same as any other employee in whichever department I happen to be working in at the time. This is one apprenticeship you will not spend making the tea!!

My direct manager is the training specialist on site so any issues get reported and dealt with very quickly. The framework and development targets are well organised but the content is up to the individual, depending on their areas of interest. We are encouraged to seek our own development opportunities as much as possible.

My training provider is Grantham college. I have studied BTEC 3, HNC and now HND level there. The lecturers are very approachable and knowledgeable as they have all got experience working in the fields that they teach. I get as much support as I need.

In the past I have needed to use work time to complete college/university assignments as some were based on projects I was doing at work. There has never been a problem. If I have ever needed to ask a question, answers were only ever an email/conversation away.

As apprentices at Cummins Generator Technologies, we are well paid. They pay enough to live on even as an older apprentice living independently.

Its a great place to start a career and grow into a role. As an apprentice the main expectation is to learn and contribute where you can. If you are confused, help is there when needed from people who have worked in the industry for years.

You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. An application now could mean qualifying as an engineer and commanding a good salary in a fulfilling role.
