  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • as a maintenance apprentice i would rotate on a 10 week basis around vital areas in which i would work and later maintain. I would learn about the areas by working with trained employees and work along side them learning their day to day roles and responsibilities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learn a complete new set of skills. Coming straight from school, i was plunged into a complete new skill set and ability level. i was taught at college and at work. the correspondence between to two worked well, this allowed what we where learning to be implemented in real life at work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed my program. it allowed me to learn and develop in my own way. it ensured i was also on target and regular meetings ensured any problems where sorted quickly. i enjoyed the role and would recommend it to others.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Cummins?
  • as apprentices we where always looked after, anything we needed was seen to quickly. Any problems that occurred where remedied quickly and an interest was taken in all work to carried out. we had meetings to present work we had undertaken, this made it feel like the staff cared about our progress.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the structure worked well with the first year at college then progressing to day release in the following 3 years. However Warwickshire college was completely unorganized and incompetent, i would go as far as saying unfit to teach. the apprenticeship program at cummins although looked after could well do with a restructure and rethink to how apprentices are integrated into departments.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Warwickshire college was pathetic. they did not have the right equipment to teach. they where over run by JLR apprentices and cummins apprentices where overlooked. our lectures changed all of the time causing problems. Other lectures could not answer questions we where asking and software kept expiring. However our ITM's worked well during the NVQ.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • all the support we required was provided. equipment, training and everything else was looked after to a high standard. any problems where investigated. The company invested time and effort into out development.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Excellent, Cummins pay apprentices very well compared to other apprenticeships i looked at. The wage outweighed living costs whilst i was living at home. i managed to save enough to move out in my final year.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • plenty, Cummins has social, sport and other clubs. They create sports teams and carry out trips to various cities. The apprentices go on a team bonding week the the peak district and do adventure activities.

  • 9. Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • They work well with their apprentices and give them continuous support. even after my apprenticeship they paid for me to carry out a degree in engineering. The look after their employees and ensure they are happy. Cummins ensure that everyone is safe and happy at work.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
  • Be a good listener, and follow procedures correctly. Think out side the box and show potential at every opportunity.
