  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • During the Work experience, our daily tasks were given once we were placed in our seats for the one week placement. In my time, I was placed in Projects, Transactional Services (Commercial) and Banking and Restructuring. Others were placed in other fields such as CAD. I was asked to do a number of things, such as write case summaries, research businesses the firm supports for news (financial/new projects) to add to the firms newsletter, answer and research questions about the work and terms used in the Projects area, and to generally be engaged and ask questions. In the morning, different talks and activities were held, some with feedback given. We all were able to ask questions about law and other questions associated with the practice, and we were given feedback when we did a mock employment tribunal as well as a business task.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed skills such as: confidence, teamwork, communication skills, research skills, analysis, punctuality, dedication, motivation among others. I now better understand terminology used in law firms and am able to put this experience on my C.V.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I very much enjoyed the work experience, and would do it again if I could. Though it may have been nice to choose which fields to participate in, I liked that we were picked randomly for each field, allowing me to walk into each area of law Pinsent Masons specialises in objectively and a willingness to learn. Though I was quiet on one of the tasks and was given feedback to speak more, I was encouraged and helped, allowing me to grow in confidence to complete the mock employment tribunal (with my role as claimant's representative) on the last day of the work experience. It did meet my expectations but even more so in terms of the friendliness of the trainees and paralegals as well as their patience in explaining different terminologies and answering my questions. The teams are all friendly to each other, and though I haven't been in every area, I would believe from my experience it would be the same in those as well.

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a very enjoyable experience. Not just because it will make them stand out in university applications and job interviews, but also because they will meet new people, learn valuable, unique skills and will be able to fully understand what work is like at a successful, international law firm. They won't feel isolated but included.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Pinsent Masons?
  • To get involved; to not be afraid to ask questions; to engage in activities and not be afraid to share their own opinions.
