  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Conversing both on a professional and a casual level with my superiors, making sure to not step above my place but to still fit in with those above me. They all treated me as an equal, not a hired worker or anything less. Notably, I was basically tasked with dealing with one of their clients who regularly came into the office. He often needed assistance and wanted someone to bounce ideas off of, and since my superiors were too busy to help him for long periods of time, I was tasked with assisting him on my own.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I was responsible for using a lot of equipment, such as high-end video and digital cameras, which required a great deal of technical prowess and responsibility. I was given a run-down on how to operate the cameras and was fortunate enough to pick up the basics quite quickly, allowing me to keep up with what my supervisors required of me. Whenever there was something I didn’t know how to do, I asked for assistance from my supervisor. Alongside that, as I was working as an editor I was using a lot of professional grade editing software on Apple hardware. While some software I was already familiar with, others I was using for the first time and had to pick it up incredibly quickly.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I had a thoroughly great time and thought my experience there was invaluable! I will put together a detailed portfolio of all my work ready to apply to editing positions in the future, making sure to include what I created on my work experience as evidence of what I achieved there. Working there really helped me get ready for doing this and by doing this I have experience which is both enjoyable and invaluable.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Giant Leap Productions?
  • As soon as I got into the office, I continued working on my behind the scenes project, something which I kept at during any ‘down-time’ in the day where I was not tasked with anything else. I’d work solidly throughout the day, making sure I was completely happy with any section of the video before asking for the opinion of my supervisors. I wanted to make the video the best it could possibly be and so toiled for hours and hours on it. I believe they valued me for this.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not very, it was very casual. Hours were lenient and the work flexible and varied, which I personally really liked. Whenever tasked with something, I got on with it straight away, like when I was tasked with creating the behind the scenes video, which ultimately became my main task of the week. Also, whenever my supervisors needed some help on a shoot, whether it was just carrying equipment of helping line up shots, I reliably assisted them in any way I could.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I was already trained but anything I needed help on they would help me. Whenever I was not working with the team on their own projects, I was constantly working on the behind the scenes video. Usually I’d arrive before one of the members of the team, so I would log onto a computer straight away and start working until told otherwise, utilizing my time as much as possible. I would also take the initiative to set up tripods for an upcoming shoot of the day, organize the studio and assist the regular client that came into the office of my own accord.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I was already trained but anything I needed help on they would help me. Whenever I had an issue or didn’t understand something, I didn’t let pride get in the way and owned up to it, if at first I couldn’t find the solution on my own. Also, I was always truthful when they asked for my opinion on something, making sure to politely relate my thoughts and ideas.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I was unpaid and the travel did put me quite out of pocket, but you live and learn.

    8/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Hopefully? Not sure what this question means. I will put together a detailed portfolio of all my work ready to apply to editing positions in the future, making sure to include what I created on my work experience as evidence of what I achieved there. This will really help me do that and I hope there are many opportunities for me outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend Giant Leap Productions to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I had a really great time there and others could learn a lot working there too.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Giant Leap Productions?
  • Have a working knowledge of what might be required of you and be prepared to get your hands on any opportunity that comes your way.
