Retail Assistant - Filling shelves, testing products, till work, serving customers, cleaning tasks and window displays. These tasks were all very appealing and made the time I was there very enjoyable
It really helped me develop my independent working and especially group working when it came to working and communicating with fellow colleagues. I was till trained for the type of work I was doing as well.
As I am unsure of what career path I wish to take after college, it was really helpful to get an idea of retail work. The tasks set for each day were very enjoyable and the team as a whole were amazing to work with.
When it was our final day, the manager paid us and was not expecting this as it was totally voluntary. Also, the manager often praised us on good work which was also very nice as it gave you something to aim for other than just doing the job
The induction was a tour of the shop and then the procedures for the Health and Safety aspects such as a fire drill. I was trained for anything that was new and everyone shared rolls/tasks so people could choose what they were most comfortable with.
The training provider was the manger herself as it is a independent company. This training was thorough and ensured we could do all tasks that may be required of us. If we had any issues, she was on hand to ask straight away which was amazing as it saved time for the customer and embarrassment on my behalf
This is like above, as the training provider was the employer. This meant that all staff were trained in exactly the same way and meant there was no confusion which was helpful as I could ask anyone for support when needed.
The location was in the City centre so is easily accessible by public transport but this can be expense so is an added cost. This can be off putting as local jobs wouldn't have this. Also, as it is an independent company, the wage can be lower than compared to larger chains.
There aren't really as such. Company activities such as an afternoon out by the river or a trip to the local ice cream parlour occurs but larger events such as staff parties don't occur.
Yes
It is a great way to see what it is like to work in a retail environment and can really help decide whether this is the correct path for your future, and if not, it is still experience that your future employer will look for.
The application process is very easy and once completed, you may be offered an interview at the shop. This is where a few basic questions get asked and you would then be offered a role if this is the outcome of the interview.
