  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Software Engineer, on a day to day basis this involves communicating with customers about their problems and trying to illicit concrete requirements. I also have to refine these requirements in to small deliverables such that it can be completed by a number of engineers (My self included). The aim is to provide the highest level of customer experience possible whilst solving the customers issue.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many softer employability skills and feel that I am now far more employable across the board. I have developed my skills as a software engineer and am now very proficient in a number of languages. Finally I have developed as a manager, managing one or many parts of a larger project and ensuring all aspects of the parts I am responsible for are delivered on time and to the highest possible standard.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Quite simply. Joining BT as an apprentice was the best decision I have ever made.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • In every team I have worked in, I have felt values and respected. My opinions and ideas are always listened to and in many cases they are worked on and are implemented. The best feeling you can have as an engineer is to see your own ideas and work enjoyed and used by the public.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is undergoing a huge number of changes. Although my personal experience was of being caught in a transition. I am confident that once the changes and new schemes are implemented, the experience will be as organised and smooth running as it was before the change. The lecturers at Uni are very capable and good to work with. There is plenty of support in all areas, be that help with course work, or advice on pensions.

  • My lecturer is highly experienced and is easy to listen to, this combination results in a very productive working environment.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My apprentice coach is able and experienced, offering just the right amount of support to allow me to get my training done whilst also pursuing my own career and forging my own path through the company.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The wage starts at a level that is more than adequate for a young person living at home, this increases annually. The final salary range is good for many of the jobs people could be doing. For those that completed a top-up degree the salary is not competitive compared to others who joined the company through the graduate pathway. It is therefore common for talented apprentices to progress on to the graduate scheme or to apply for promotions when they finish their apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There is an almost endless conveyor belt of country wide volunteering opportunities is every thing you could think of. Paired with BTs 3 Paid volunteering days per year this can offer a nice way to do something different and give back to the community. There are also a number of company sport and recreational clubs.

  • Yes

  • For all of the benefits, perks and advantages that being a BT employee can provide. Superb training, employee internet and phone deals, great work life balance.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • In the interview - be your self, show the interviewer that you are keen and interested. Be proactive and don't be afraid to ask them questions back. On the assessment day - Show that you are a team player by looking after others as well as your self. Talk to the other candidates, encourage them, make sure everyones ideas are heard. Succeed together. Try and do some industry relevant work experience, preferably at BT, this will help and give something to talk about in the interview.
