  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Network Engineer, more specifically a WiFi Designer. My daily tasks involve creating configurations for our customer WiFi sites (e.g Starbucks). I have daily interactions with my line manager, and my immediate team for help and support with work. I also interact with platform managers from other parts of the business. I'm responsible for delivering configs for customer sites in the timescales given. I've been involved in various projects including rationalising our test model.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learnt lots of ICT skills through my NVQ. I've picked up lots of technical skills for my job through university, in my Network Engineering and Communications FDSC. I also get lots of online training to do at work called ALP's to help me with my operational work. I also get to learn from experienced team members on a daily basis.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The people I work with are friendly and helpful making it easier to enjoy my job. The culture of the company is also very laid back, making it a good place to come and work. It exceeded my expectations.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BT?
  • BT take on lots of apprentices, and I think we're all really valued as they stress we're the future of the company. This is reflected by the opportunities they give to us, such as managing large projects and being given lots of responsibility. We also have performance reviews to see how we're getting on regularly.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We have a week training at Yarnfield before we join which is a great way to start and get to meet other apprentices. The support from our apprentice coaches is excellent and they're always ready to help if you need them. We get given time to study for our University and NVQ which is really helpful.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • My training provider is always available to help, and provides me with all the resources and support to complete my qualifications.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer respects the amount of university and NVQ work I have, and will always give me extra time if I need it. They always will facilitate me if I have a problem to ensure I'm comfortable in the work place.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is brilliant and can have no complaints, no struggle for money unless I book too many holidays.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I've been involved in lots of big company events in London which are a great way to meet new people. We get given 3 days a year to volunteer if we want too. I also get involved in basketball and football with my colleagues on a weekly basis.

  • 9. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a great place to start a career, with friendly people and a good working environment. On top of that the salary and university degree that is offered is hard to find.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Ask lots of questions in your interview and assessment days, show that you want to work here and that your inquisitive.
