  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Currently, the apprenticeship is college based only with occasional visits to work during academic holidays. In the business, I will be a wind service technician, maintaining and servicing wind turbine generators.

  • Developed practical electrical and mechanical skills and procedures, learnt new theory involving electrical and mechanical work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very enjoyable so far. Good mixture of hands on and practical learning. Feel that I will enjoy it for the foreseeable future.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by SSE?
  • Very valued. There are good benefits for all SSE employees but as an apprenctice we are very well looked after and have access to a range of support and help.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Well structured. College to begin with to gain qualifications and make learning in the business more beneficial.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive lots of support. Regular review visits and contact with support staff whenever required.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support. Employer and college have very good communication and regularly share review visits and progress reports.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Current (first year) Salary meets my costs relatively well. Upon completing apprenticeship salary will be excellent for my age group.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Currently as I am at college and staying away from home, there is a big opportunity to socialise with other apprentices and make new friends.

  • 9. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • So far they are a very good employer. We are looked after and treated fairly. There is lots of progression opportunity within the company.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • Read up about SSE's values and core responsibilities. Know the role you're applying for and know roughly what is expected of you.
