  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in the Operation Technology team, support the control engineers who operate the electrical grid and manage the systems and devices used by both the control engineers and ourselves. I manage this using a desktop but also attend other sites on occasion.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My IT skills have developed tremendously since joining with SSE. I know more about SQL, Linux, PowerShell and other IT functionalities. I also have additional knowledge and context for how power is distributed and transmitted across the UK as well as an understanding of company sites.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme thoroughly. This has been one of the most rewarding and interesting roles I have ever undertaken and am very grateful for this exclusive opportunity. I look forward to something new everyday knowing that there is always something to learn.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I feel like another member of the team in my role. In a lot of ways I do feel even particularly given the recent investment in new team members in my department. There are, however, some shortcomings and mixed messages in the transparency of my apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Usually, there is always someone on hand who can support me when there is a challenge I have not encountered before and require assistance with. Though at times this support can feel distant with the business of the department, it wouldn't be impossible to find someone to support me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training providers provide adequate support for the qualifications I am working toward. They have an intimate understanding of the subject matter and can articulate this well. They are, additionally, always available to be contacted for any further questions or concerns I may have. Unfortunately, this is not consistent across all providers, but I am not restricted to specific individuals.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The IT Management for Business degree will be a tremendous support in performing my role better. There are upcoming topics and modules that I am interested in personally, and I believe with enhance by base of knowledge and understanding for my ongoing role with SSE. Additionally, this qualification is particularly suited for future career advancement.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • SSE employees routinely put forward events and plans for social activities and gatherings outside of work. There are events advertised globally to SSE for all employees, and local ones constrained to my immediate department. I have attended local events and enjoyed them, particularly as they are with people I am already familiar with them.

    8/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Not only does this role have a above-standard starting pay for an apprenticeship, it has pay progression, a degree at the end of the apprenticeship and a full-time role in the respective team I am working in. If anyone were stuck on what they wanted to do in the future, they would be doing themselves a disservice to not at least consider SSE as an employment prospect.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • SSE stands for Scottish & Southern Energy. But with the information they drill into you, it may as well be Safety Safety Experts. Do everything in your power to prioritise safety, demonstrate your competence and interest in SSE, and show you are a pleasant team-player who gets along with others. Accomplish all three and you'll give yourself the best possible shot you can get.
