  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The Flying Start degree programme involves doing cycles of studying at university and paid work placements. As an auditor, we are required to design and perform testing procedures that allow us to obtain comfort over balances included within financial statements. A usual day would see me being at the client site and performing testing that traces the balances included in the financial statements to supporting documentation. I work independently, but receive a range of support from my seniors.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The course really allows me to develop the accounting and auditing skills that are required by the ACA qualification. Whilst being part of University, your exams give you exemptions to 12/15 of the ACA qualifications. I have also been able to develop a vast range of professional and communications skills that are extremely valuable in the working environment.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by PwC?
  • PwC value and recognise us as professional individuals and it is clear that the firm think quite highly of Flying Start students. They provide us with a range of support. However, due to the size of the firm and the number of employees, it can sometimes be quite difficult to see how I am valued as an individual. However, you are personally responsible for your development and using the opportunities available in order to be recognised.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The course is very well structured and it is always clear what is expected of us across the 4 years of the course. We have been provided with training both at university and in the firm that has been helpful to both studies and working. The support has been excellent from both the university and colleagues at PwC.

  • The University provide us with plenty of support, whilst at uni and also on placement. It is always clear to us what is expected of us in our exams and we get ample support. The lecturers are clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. I also value how they keep in touch with you whilst you are away on placement.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a lot of support from PwC. My people manager has been an excellent source of contact to answer any of my questions and concerns. Our people managers help us with our professional and personal development and are always there to answer questions and support us. In addition to this there is an excellent group of Flying Starts who buddy each other, meaning older year groups share their experiences and offer all the support they can. It is great to have PwC behind me.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Our salary is a very generous one. Any expenses incurred for business purposes are reimbursed to you. Whilst on placement, if your chosen office is over an hour commute away from your home, PwC offer accommodation free of charge. This is extremely helpful as it also means whilst you are on placement you have very few worries and can focus your attention on the work.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities available to you outside of work. PwC offer volunteering opportunities and also plenty of extra-curricular activities. It is entirely up to you what you would like to get involved in, if there is something that interests you, you can speak to your Career Coach and they will help guide you to any opportunities available.

  • 9b. Why?
  • The Flying Start course is an excellent way of becoming a chartered accountant and receiving the support to do so. You build a wide range of skills that are valuable for your professional and personal development. You are also able to build a large network at uni and on placement, which is a vital element of being an accountant.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to PwC?
  • Do plenty of research. You have to be passionate about wanting to work hard, learn and enter a competitive market. Students should research the PwC professional which is Business Accumen, Technical Capabilities, Global accumen, self leadership, leading others, and relationships. Students should think of how they have demonstrated the skills desired by PwC across these areas. They should take opportunities to have work experience at the firm.
