  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Commercial Trainee with Mace on their apprenticeship programme currently working in the bidding and estimating department which involves learning about the role of an estimator and the bid process, assisting the team with tasks such as measurements and cost plan analysis as well as attending university once a week.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am learning new things about the construction industry as a whole every day from the experienced professional around me as well as improving my technical knowledge through my studies

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed every aspect of this programme so far from the site visits to prestigious projects around London, attending university with the rest of the apprentices to social events arranged by both the apprenticeship group and my collegues in the office.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Mace?
  • Mace put a lot of emphasis on developing young professionals and through the responsibilities I am given and the feedback I receive from my line manager as well as director of the company I feel extremely valued by mace.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme has been very well organized and the structured learning through site visits and internal seminars have allowed me to learn my job role at a pace that is not too daunting with excellent support from colleagues throughout the business- all the way up to director level

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • we have been provided with mentors from within the business which have helped us settle in as well as providing us with an extra source of support in addition to the ongoing relationship with my line manager and the 'Emerging talent' team.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • as above, I have receive excellent support from people at all levels of the business which has allowed me to learn the role at my own pace with problems I have raised always being acted upon.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • my salary has been enough to support my lifestyle as well as receiving help with travel costs and certain social event have been funded over Christmas time, for example.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I have had external training funded by Mace to help me progress in my role as well as participating in multiple volunteer days in a local community center and a nature reserve.

  • 9. Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Mace invest a lot in there apprentices and give them all the help and support they need to start a career in construction. Having came into Mace with no experience or knowledge of the role I would be doing, I now feel very confident that I will have a successful career in the construction industry after only 6 months


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
  • Mace are looking for people with the right attitude rather than the right experience or knowledge so being approachable, eager to learn, and able to think outside the box are all very important. the application process consisted of an online application, a group interview and an individual interview.
